There were at "Fleetwood" when Kate Whitehead was born and at "Providence" when Lucy Whitehead was born. Both of those sites are thought to be near Roseland. Their final move was to Maria's home, Willow Brook, the home built by her father, Mr. George Williams. It is presumed Floyd and Elizabeth took care of the aging Mr. Williams as his other children had moved from Nelson County. Elizabeth later inherited the home. She also purchased a significant portion of the original estate from Maria's siblings. Whitehead FHL Film Number: 2048577 (Virginia, Deaths and Burials Index, 1853-1917) ========================================== FORKLAND AND THE WHITEHEADS "Forkland", named for its location in the fork of Loving Creek, a branch of Rucker's Run (Rts. 56 & 29), has been in the Whitehead family since 1832. As the home of a prominent family within the county, including three generations of Commonwealth's Attorneys, whose portraits hang in the courtroom, "Forkland" has a rich and varied past, both historically and architecturally. The earliest known owners of the land are Walter King, merchant of Bristol, and Thomas Mann Randolph. The 221 acres conveyed by them to Lunsford Lomax the elder in 1764 were originally part of a 6,000 acre tract. In 1767 those 221 acres were conveyed to his son Lunsford the Younger and by him in 1709 to George Purvis, and then divided between two of his sons Charles and George (Jr.). Before 1820 the original two room frame house with loft was built on George Purvis (Jr.)'s land and is now the back portion of the house. In 1832 and 1834 Charles and George Purvis (Jr.) sold the original 221 acres to Floyd Lee Whitehead (1804-1884), a farmer and merchant. Between 1820 and 1838 the first major addition to the house was made, adding the front central block. Nancy Camden Whitehead, widow of Burcher and mother of Floyd Lee was buried at "Forkland" in 1838. Floyd Lee Whitehead's first wife, Mary Eliza beth Armstrong, died in 1839. In 1840 he married Maria Pettus Williams, daughter of George Williams of "Willow Brook", where Floyd died in 1884. In 1842 Floyd and Maria sold "Forkland" to Christopher T. Estes, who named it "Farmville". Martha, Christopher Estes's widow sold the farm to Alexander Fitzpatrick. In 1863 "Farmville/ Forkland" was sold to Robert Whitehead. According to Robert's obituary written by Captain Charles Blackford, Robert moved to "Forkland" in 1853. "The George Gwathmey" (first father-in-law) Bible states that all the children of Robert Whitehead's second marriage to Margaret Daniel Baldwin were born at "Forkland", so Robert must have rented the property at least by 1857 prior to buying it in 1863." Children of Robert's first marriage to Lucy Baylor Gwathmey were born in Lynchburg and Lovingston. In 1880 the two large Victorian wings were added to the front of "Forkland", as well as the front porch and fake dormers and chimney. At the time of Robert's death in 1898 he owned over 700 acres all one or two miles south of Lovingston. The listed owners are his widow Margaret Daniel Whitehead (d. 1899) two children from his first marriage: Dr. John Baylor Whitehead (1842-1916) and Anna Irvine W. Smoot (1844-1934) and four children from his second marriage: Stuart Baldwin Whitehead (1859-1933), Mary Briscoe Whitehead (1864-1947), Sarah (Sadie) Whitehead (1867-1924), and Robert Frederick Whitehead (1869-1951). In 1915 land on the east side of the Shipman Road, "Edgehill", was conveyed to Robert's son Stuart Baldwin Whitehead, then Commonwealth's Attorney and married to Susan Withers Massie. In 1916 another tract "White Plains" was divided from "Forkland" and granted to Stuart's son John Baylor Whitehead, Jr. (1894-1957), County Farm Agent, who married Linda Berrey. In 1922 6.6 acres for "Windy Ridge" were sold to another of Stuart's sons, Robert Whitehead (1897-1960), the third generation Commonwealth's Attorney (1933 1941) and member of the House of Delegates (1941-1960). Robert and Sallie Carter Whitehead's daughter Ann Carter Whitehead (Thomas) (1924) was the last child born at "Forkland". The remaining 240 acres of that made up "Forkland" in 1924 after Sarah's death were owned jointly by the siblings Mary B. Whitehead, Anna W. Smoot and Robert F. Whitehead. This was conveyed in 1947-51 to Stuart B. Whitehead, Fr. (1902-1969) and his wife Jesse Falls. In 1973 Paul Whitehead, (1900-1991) Lynchburg attorney and Commander USNR, and Stuart B. Whitehead (Sr.)'s children and grandchildren jointly owned "Forkland". February 1992 the entire "Forkland" farm consisting of 232.2 acres was inherited and purchased by Paul Whitehead, Jr. (1945-), General District Judge for Amherst and Lynchburg.
