Herzog, 94, a longtime resident of Melbourne died on September 21, 2014, at Southridge Nursing Home, in Marshalltown. Funeral services at St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne, Iowa. Floyd was born on February 27th, 1920, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Louis and Minnie Herzog. He grew up on the family farm south of Melbourne, and was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical and Reform Church in Melbourne. He attended a country school until going to Van Cleave High School where he graduated in 1937. In November 1936, Van Cleave asked the 1937 graduating class their vocation for the years to come, and Floyd's response was aviation. Upon graduating from Van Cleave, Floyd spent his time farming on the homestead until being called into the service. Stationed at Ft. Warren, Wyoming, January 1942 to February 1942; Camp Normoyle, San Antonio, Texas, February 1942 to May 1942; Ft. Meade, Maryland, May 1942, 76th QM Co., A.P. Hill Military Reservation, Fredericksburg, Virginia, 1943 Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, 1943; Camp Pori, Mchigan, 1944 for winter training. Sailed from Boston, Massachusetts, Dec. 10, 1944 on the SS RICHARDSON. Attended QM Motor Transport School, Camp Normoyle, TX., Feb 10,1942, subject 12 weeks motorcycle course in 1942. Thirty Second Gas Noncommissioned Officers Course, Edgewood Arsenal, MD., in 1944. Participated in battles at Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Discharged Nov. 4th, 1945 from Camp Grant, Illinois. Achieved rank of sergeant, section leader 356. Was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern with three Bronze Metal Stars, Victory Medal, one Service Stripe, and one Overseas Service Bar. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Floyd returned to his home and farmed with his father. He continued to farm on the homestead that had been in his family for two generations until his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his two nieces and two nephews, Mark McCutcheon and family (Aaron, Seth, Ashley) of Harlan IA., Patti and her husband Tom Knop of Denver CO., Terri and her husband Darrell Jones of Phoenix AZ ., and Monte McCutcheon and his wife Dawn and family (Lauren, Danae, Stephen) of Portland Oregon; cousins Lloyd Preston and wife Leona of Marshalltown, Beverly Heckman of Marshalltown, and Mary Lou Fleming of Zearing Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Minnie Herzog; his sister Doris McCutcheon and brother-in-law Robert; and his brother Virgil L. Herzog and sister-in-law Audiene.
