Read More	Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Monday 24 July 1916 Boy Slides Into Hole; Is Drowned Divers Recover Body Floyd Smith of Edgewood Loses His Life in Maquoketa River at Manchester Manchester, Iowa -- Friday night about 8 o'clock Floyd Smith, 21 year old, of Edgewood was drowned in the Maquoketa river here while in bathing. A number of young men from Edgewood have been in the habit of coming in their cars for a swim in the river here at the foot of Union Street. The party had just gotten into bathing suits and crossed the river when Smith walked into a deep hole. He was not a good swimmer and apparently walked in without thought of danger and stepped beyond his depth. The telephone was used to call Dr. H.M. Bradley and expert divers and they hurried to the scene and got the body out twenty minutes after he sank. One of the Edgewood party was a doctor and with his help two of the local doctors worked faithfully to restore life. About 9 o'clock someone remembered that there was a pulmotor in Independence and that was phoned for. That was brought about 10:15 and again every effort was made to restore life, but without success. Mr. Smith was the son of Will Smith of Edgewood and a nephew of Truman Smith and Charles H. Smith, farmers near this city. Edgewood Journal Thursday 27 July 1916 Floyd Smith Was Drowned In River Edgewood Young Man Met Death In Maquoketa River At Manchester Last Friday Night Floyd Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Smith of this place, was accidentally drowned while in bathing, with a party of men from this place, in the Maquoketa River at Manchester. The accident occurred about seven o'clock in the evening and after part of the men had left the water and were on the opposite side of the river from where the man was drowned. Suddenly those who were left in the water noticed a hand appear above the water and thought it was someone one fooling as they had been during the swim, but when they saw it come up the second and third time without the head and rest of the body appearing they made up their minds something was wrong and immediately formed a human chain to try and save the poor fellow. It so happened that the remaining fellows who were then in the water were none of them very good swimmers and not accustomed to diving, so did all in their power to reach the drowning man by taking hold of hands and pushing out into deep water, the depth being 15 to 20 feet where he went down. They were unable to do so, however, and having already given the alarm, other men were soon on the scene, including a couple of good divers from Manchester, who finally succeeded in locating the body and getting it to the surface. Dr. Gray of this place, who was a member of the party, immediately went to work, aided by the other men, in efforts to resuscitate the poor fellow and were joined by Dr. Bradley in the work which was of no avail. Finally a pulmotor was secured from Independence and this used in an effort to get life into the body, but it was too late. Mr. Smith was not a good swimmer and evidently was taken with heart failure or cramps and sank to his untimely death right before the eyes of his comrades who did all in their power to save him from a watery grave. His remains were brought to the grief-stricken home that night and the funeral was held in the Congregational church Sunday morning at eleven o'clock, Rev. C.H. True preaching the sermon. A large number of Floyd's personal friends joined together in showing their respect for him and his bereaved family by furnishing several pretty floral designs as a token of their esteem for the deceased. Burial was made in the Edgewood cemetery. A large number of sorrowing relatives and friends were present to pay their last respects to one who had so recently been among them, alive and strong in physical manhood. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their dark hour of sorrow. The pallbearers were Henry May, Harry Wilfong, Paul Ruch, Andrew Hesner, Lee Robinson, and Frank Welterlen.
