He had been in failing health the past five years. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Miller-Godberson Mortuary, Gibbon. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Gibbon. Mr. Whiting was born at David City, Oct. 10, 1888, to James and Olive Preston Whiting. He and Maude Stewart were married Jan. 23, 1910, at Greeley. They farmed near Shelton and retired in 1937. His son Lyle Whiting was a leading jockey at tracks throughout the nation. Mr. Whiting owned and trained a string of race horses during his active years. He headquarters was Hot Springs, Ark. His wife died in 1956. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Scott of Wheatland, Calif., and Mrs. Charles Herter of Shelton, and one son, Lyle of Hot Springs; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy and James of Ord and Jesse of North Loup; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Lee and Mrs. Fern Peterson of Hood River, Ore., and Mrs. Mary Wooden of Arcadia.
