Folan received his bachelor's from Appalachian State University, masters from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a post graduate degree from The University of South Carolina. He enjoyed a long career in school administration including serving as the principal at Boiling Springs High School from 1985 to 1993. Folan was a member of the Army Reserve, a Mason, and a Shriner.
