Description	:	Folkert was born to Hinderikus and Stientje J. (Hanssen) Smit. Folkert married Talka Smidt on Feb. 4, 1879. Henry F., Catherine, Christine, Bernhard S., Anna, Tillie, Folkert E. and Bertha were born to this union. Folkert attained the age of 88 years, 4 months and 30 days. (Hanssen) Smit. Folkert married Talka Smidt on Feb. 4, 1879. Henry F., Catherine, Christine, Bernhard S., Anna, Tillie, Folkert E. and Bertha were born to this union. In spite of his advanced age, Mr. Smit had always enjoyed good health until four weeks ago when he slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk outside his house, fracturing his left hip. Since that time he had been confined to his bed. He gradually grew weaker and slept peacefully into that eternal rest. Mr. Smit was born at Weener, Ostfriesland, Germany on Nov. 13, 1854. There he grew to young manhood and when 14 years of age entered the German navy, serving four years. In 1872 he came to the United States with his parents, who located in Holland, Iowa. There on Feb. 4, 1879 he was united in marriage with Miss Talka Smidt, and the couple continued their residence near Holland, Iowa for six years. In 1884 the family came to this community and located on a farm two miles south of Lennox. There he farmed for forty years, taking up his residence in Lennox in the spring of 1925. Mrs. Smit preceded her husband in death on March 2, 1924. This union was blessed with eight children, namely, Henry, Kate (Mrs. Harm Brinkmeyer), Christine, Ben, Tillie (Mrs. Martin Flitz), Folkert, Annie (Mrs. Casper Buse), and Bertha (Mrs. John A. Bultena); also four brothers, John and Henry of Grundy County, Iowa, George A Smit, Lennox and M. A. Smit, Madison.
