He died on July 17, 2007 at Melissa Memorial Hospital. Forest attended school at the small Prairie Valley School, and then Holyoke High School. As a young boy, Forest enjoyed hunting and playing music with a dance band. Forest had a lifelong passion for the sport of baseball, and enjoyed both playing and being a spectator. Forest pitched and played first base and as a young man he turned down an offer to play in the minor leagues. Forest served as a clerk in the Army Air Force during World War II from May 21, 1943 until his honorable discharged on March 29, 1946. During his service, Forest was stationed primarily in England and Germany. When Forest returned home after the war, he continued two of his lifelong passions of working on cars and playing baseball. Forest fell into the habit of visiting the Standard Drug Store each day to order a cherry phosphate. It was there he met his sweetheart, Joan Sullivan. On August 16, 1947, Forest and Joan married in Golden. Forest passed away just one month short of their 60th wedding anniversary. Forest worked as a mechanic in Holyoke then moved to Denver where he worked at various alignment shops and sold real estate. Daughter, Katherine Ann (Long) Timm was born on August 2, 1950; Son, Dan Long was adopted in 1961. Forest was a devoted and loving father and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After several moves, Forest returned to Holyoke and remodeled the home where he and Joan have resided for nearly 37 years. Forest served as an officer for the Holyoke Police Department for 14 years until 1986. While working the night shift, Forest studied to become a locksmith. For 35 years Forest served the community of Holyoke as a locksmith, opening locked cars and homes and installing locks in both business and residential buildings. After retiring from the police department, Forest began driving a school bus. Forest had a great affection for the children and they fondly called him Frosty. In 1997, Forest had heart surgery and he was no longer physically able to drive the school bus. Forest continued his locksmith business until he sold the business and fully retired in 2006. Forest is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Long; children, Katherine Ann (Long) Timm and her husband, Bob, son, Dan Long and wife, Cara; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nellie and Bill Long and grandson, Kevin Timm. Funeral services were held Friday, July 20 at the Christian church in Holyoke with Scott Gerlach officiating. Interment followed at the Holyoke Memorial Park. The funeral arrangements were made by Baucke Funeral Home.
