Baer, 63, 414 Stitt Street, one of Wabash County's most popular officeholders, died in his sleep of a coronary attack about 5:30 a.m. Friday. He had been in his usual good spirits the night before and had shown pictures of recent trips to friends. But later he complained of a stomach upset. His death was discovered by Mrs. Baer when he failed to shut off the alarm clock. Mr. Baer was serving on the last year of his first four-year term as County Auditor. He was first elected on the Republican ticket in 1954 and was reelected to a second term in 1958. Auditors do not assume office until more than a year after their election. He also had served as County Veterans Service Officer from 1945-56. On Oct. 3, 1955, he received a citation from the Nation Rehabilitation Commission of the American Legion for "meritorious service and loyal cooperation in the Legion's rehabilitation program." The award was signed by Robert M. McCurdy, national chairman, and Joe Kraabel, national director. It was one of his prized possessions. Mr. Baer only a few days ago had told a friend that he would like nothing better after completing his terms than to set up a small office where he could offer help to veterans, their widows and children. WAS A NATIVE OF URBANA He was born Oct. 7, 1895, in the Urbana community, the son of the late H.G. and Minnie (Rager) Baer. After being graduated from Urbana High School in 1914, he enrolled in a commercial course at Manchester College. During World War I, Mr. Baer saw overseas duty with Co. A of the 17th machinegun battalion of the old 6th Division. After the war, he relocated in Urbana, where he was in the grocery business with his uncle, Adam Baer. Mr. Baer moved to Wabash in 1937 and had been a resident here ever since. For a number of years he was proprietor of the Standard Service Station at Manchester and Harrison Avenues. He was married to the former Eva Cripe of Urbana, who survives together with the following children: Mrs. George (Marcea) Hoover, South Bend; Mrs. Charles (Lola) Glazier, Wabash; Mrs. Wallace (Glenda) Jones, Wabash; Don Baer, Warren, and Mrs. Raymond (Anna Lee) Christle, West Lafayette. He also is survived by one brother, Ted G. Baer, Kenmore, N.Y. and 10 grandchildren. One brother, Wayne G. Baer, South Bend, preceded him in death in 1951. He had been active in the civic and fraternal live of the community. He was a member of Stineman Post No. 15 of the American Legion, serving that organization for nine years as post adjutant. He likewise belonged to Voiture No. 978 of the 40 & 8, and Lumaree-Hays Post of the VFW. Mr. Baer was worshipful master of Hanna Lodge No. 61. F. & A.M. in 1952. He was a 32nd Degree Mason by virtue of membership in both the Scottish and York Rite bodies. The decedent was a present elder in the Wabash Presbyterian Church and previously a deacon. He was a member of the Izaac Walton League. Mr. Baer filled the unexpired term of T. Billington on the City Council in the second Showalter administration. The body was taken to the Eddingfield Mortuary, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday. Services will be held in the Eddingfield Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Monday with Dr. Ware W. Wimberly, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, in charge. #Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. The Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside services and the Legion will present the American flag. FUNERAL - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) Funeral servcies for Forrest G. Baer, Wabash County Auditor, were conducted in the Eddingfield Chapel Monday forenoon with Dr. Ware W. Wimberly in charge. Mrs. R.B. Small was at the organ. #Burial was in Falls Cemetery, where services were held at the grave by the past-commanders of the American Legion, represented by Dr. Frederick M. Whisler. The American flag was presented by Past Commander Homer Clevenger. Graveside services were also held by Hanna Ldoge No. 61 F. &. A.M. with J.W. Lewis giving the oration. Pallbearers were past masters of Hanna Lodge, Jack Brady, C.P. Bender, Harry P. Fisher, Merritt Sills, Judge John W. Beauchamp, and Ward Vendegrift.
