Cox Funeral services for Forrest Simmerman Cox, 50, who died on Thursday, December 22, as the result of an apparent accident of undetermined origin while driving a team on his farm near Baywood, were held here in the First Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. The body was taken to the church one hour earlier. Dr. M. A. Stevenson, pastor of the church, and Rev. L. D. Mayberry, pastor of Longview Methodist Church, of which the deceased was an active member, conducted the services. During the rites the choir sang "Abide With Me," "Sometime We'll Understand" and "God Be With You." Miss Barbara English sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." The body was interred in the family plot in the Town cemetery in Galax east side. Mr. Cox, who was born June 20, 1889, is survived by the widow, Mrs. Dalla Osborne Cox, to whom he was married June 14, 1929; two daughters, Patsy Ann, a student at Radford College, Radford, and Frances Jo, a member of this year's Senior class at Galax High School; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Cox, Baywood, and the following brothers and sisters: Chap H. Cox, Baywood; Paul G. Cox, Galax; Mrs. Randolph Noell, Hillsville; Fred M. Cox, Radford; Randolph Cox, Stamford, Connecticut; Elbert Cox, Richmond; Col. Bruce Cox, Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois; Hardin Cox, Danville; Mrs. Ray Ward, Charleston, West Virginia, and Joe Cox, Marion. The deceased became a member of the church as a young man, and was active in church circles and community affairs in general. He was a member of the board of stewards of Longview Methodist Church at the time of his death, as well as community chairman of the grayson County Production and Marketing Association. It has been said of him that he "appreciated the privilege of citizenship and willingly accepted the responsibilities incumbent upon him as a good citizen." (Galax Gazette, Galax, Virginia, December 29, 1949, Page 6, Column 1) ____________________ Forrest Simmerman Cox, born June 20, 1900, second son of Joseph Terry Cox and Laura Hampton Cox of the Baywood section of Grayson County, married Dalla Osborne (b: March 9, 1905) on June 14, 1929. Dalla was born to Preston and Ruth Cox Osborne in the Cox's Chapel community. She graduated from Bridle Creek High School and from Virginia Intermont College. Forrest graduated from Baywood High School and studied at Roanoke Business College. They both taught school for a period of time and operated a farm in the Baywood Community. Two girls were born to them: Patsy Ann, b:Dec. 14, 1930, and Frances Jo, b:Oct. 14, 1933. Forrest died on Dec. 22, 1949. Dalla returned to teaching and was able to see that both girls completed their education. Patsy received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Radford College in 1951, and Frances received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education also from Radford College in 1954.
