Matson, 80, of Pittston went to be with his wife, Hazel Matson, who died on Jan. 19, 2007. He died at the Togus Veterans Affairs hospital, with family by his side, on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007. He was born Aug. 13, 1926, a son of Forrest Sr. and Minnie (Chapman) Matson. He was a great father and devoted husband. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He volunteered at the veterans' hospital for many years and, later on, at nursing homes. He is survived by his sister, Barbara McKechnie of Pittston; his daughter, Doris Pelletier of Auburn; three sons, Forrest Matson Jr. of Chelsea, Robert Matson of New Gloucester and Steve Matson of Lewiston; seven stepchildren, Gary Jackson and his companion, Jackie, of Gardiner, Larry Jackson and his wife, Bonnie, of Chelsea, Carl Jackson Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Pittston, Patty Hustus and her husband, Larry, of Pittston, Joyce Martin and her husband, Rudy, of Farmingdale, Carolyn Moody of Pittston, and Merline Fyfe and her husband, Conrad, of Pittston; and by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There will be visiting hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home. Following the funeral, there will be a committal service with full military honors at the chapel in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
