Frances was born on April 8, 1915 in Linton to Anthony and Emma (Wiese) Leuwer. She was raised in Linton and graduated from Linton High School in 1934. She then attended the Chicago Hairdressing School in Fargo and worked at Berthas Beauty Shop in Linton for four years. In 1941, she moved to Bismarck and took a position at Robertson's Beauty Shop. Later, during World War II, Frances moved to Seattle and worked as a beautician and also served as an USO hostess. She returned to Bismarck in 1947 to work in Annetas Beauty Shop. Frances married Brandt V. Hjelle in Chicago on Sept. 13, 1949. After the birth of her son, Vincent, she worked only part-time outside the home and devoted her time to being a wife, mother and homemaker. After her husband's death in 1975, she returned to work at St. Alexius Hospital in central service. She retired in 1985. Frances' pastimes include bridge, crossword puzzles, cooking, reading and watching baseball. She enjoyed the outdoors, for her a day spent fishing, picking chokecherries or hunting arrowheads with her family was a day well spent. A few of the memories Frances liked to share with her family and friends were her recollections of Alex McKenzies magnificent funeral at the old capitol building in 1922, watching the 164th infantry march out of Bismarck on their way to Fort Clayborne during WWII, dancing in the streets of Seattle on VJ day with other celebrants and having the opportunity to tour the USS IOWA after the war. She was a member of the American Legion and Elks auxiliaries and the Municipal Bridge Club. Frances is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Mary Kaye Hjelle, Bismarck; one step-granddaughter, Heather Stein, Bismarck; three sisters, Lucille Gorman, Portland, Ore., Bernice Leuwer, Bismarck, and Fern Bauleke, LeSuer, Minn., and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Vincent and Eugene Leuwer.
