Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Mayodan Moravian Church with Reverend Tim Byerly and Reverend Steve Craver officiating. Interment will be private at the Mayodan Moravian Graveyard. Mrs. Barham was born on February 7, 1922 in Guilford County to the late William Fewell Alberty and Mary Sue Glidewell. She moved to Mayodan in 1934. She was Valedictorian of the Mayodan Senior Class of 1940 and attended Women's College (UNC-G) from 1940 to 1942. Mrs. Barham graduated from Twin City School of Commerce in 1944 and returned that year to Mayodan to work at the Bank of Mayodan until 1946. It was that year, while working at the bank, she met Ottis Rutley Barham, whom she married July 27, 1947. Mrs. Barham was employed for thirty years with the Rockingham County School System where she served as a truant officer and assistant librarian. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and a founding member of the Mayodan Garden Club. Mrs. Barham was a member of the Mayodan Historical Society and a board member of the John Motley Morehead School of the Blind. She was honored as the Citizen of the Year of Mayodan in 1990 and honored by the Rockingham County Community College for her many years of dedicated service. Mrs. Barham was an active member of the Rockingham County Republican Party where she had served as a precinct chairman and was a past president of the Rockingham County Republican Women. She was a 1981 delegate to the National Republican Convention and selected to attend the first inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. Mrs. Barham was the first women and first Republican to chair the Board of Elections of Rockingham County. She was a recipient of the distinguished North Carolina Long Leaf Pine Award. Mrs. Barham was an active member of the Mayodan Moravian Church, which she had attended since 1934. She had served on the church Board of Elders on numerous occasions and had taught Sunday School for many years on several levels. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a four brothers, Louie Alberty, James Alberty, Paul Alberty, and Chester Alberty; two sisters, Thelma Strickland and Helen Hayden; and her husband Ottis Rutley Barham, Sr. She is survived by her children, Sallie Ann Nolan and husband Dr. Clyde Nolan of Greensboro; Ottis Rutley "Eddie" Barham, Jr. and wife Susan Stilwell Barham of Culpeper, Virginia, and Sue Moore and husband Dr. Don Moore of Stoneville; one brother, Damon Conrad Alberty; five grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth McLean, Lindsay Barham Morris, Emily Wilson Moore, Caroline Frances Barham and Sara Lillian Barham; and a special friend and caregiver, Shelby Goins. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Sunday March 2, 2008 at the Mayodan Moravian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Mayodan Moravian Church, 104 S. 3rd Avenue, Mayodan, NC 27027. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and family of North Pointe Assisted Living for love and care that was given to Mrs. Barham Ray Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
