Description	:	Frances Alston Durfey Kropp, 95, widow of Hermann Johannes Kropp, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011, after a long period of declining health. Born in Raleigh, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Margaret Allen and Cary K. Durfey. Frances Kropp was in the first graduating class of Needham Broughton High School and graduated from Peace Junior College in Raleigh, Class of 1934. She married Hermann and moved to Columbia in 1941. Read More	Frances Alston Durfey Kropp, 95, widow of Hermann Johannes Kropp, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011, after a long period of declining health. Born in Raleigh, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Margaret Allen and Cary K. Durfey. Frances Kropp was in the first graduating class of Needham Broughton High School and graduated from Peace Junior College in Raleigh, Class of 1934. She married Hermann and moved to Columbia in 1941. Frances resided on Stratford Road for most of her life in Columbia. Frances was a charter member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, an early childhood Sunday school teacher, circle member and Girl Scout leader. She was president of the P.T.A. for Melrose Park Play School. Some of her volunteer work included Civil Air Patrol, March of Dimes and United Way. Besides Frances' personal enjoyment of family and family history, she belonged to the Columbia chapter of the D.A.R. and the Magna Charta Dames. Later in life, Frances helped her husband at Kropp Jewelers. Frances is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Cary Durfey and Young McWhirter of Lake Wylie, S.C., Frances and Col. Cook Florence (Ret.) of Virginia Beach, Va., Florence and Roger Eargle of Gilbert, S.C.; grandchildren and spouses, Cary and Charles Zeberlein, Dr. Dewey and Sabine McWhirter, Monika and Dr. John Miller, Windsor and Greg Lynch, Frances and Matt Owens and Mary and Jack Wall; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Timberlake and Betty Whit Lyon, both of Alexandria, Va., and Dorothy Hoover of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her sister, Florence McNamara of Raleigh. Frances will also be missed by her extended family, Sandra, Steve, Lilly and Stephen McKinney and her childhood friend, Ruth Carlisle. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to neighbors, friends, the staff of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and to the compassionate caregivers at Presbyterian Home. A graveside service will be held noon Friday, January 21, 2011, in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel in Columbia, is in charge.
