Description	:	Frances Cevera O"Brien, the daughter of Michael Raymond and Elizabeth Gertrude McNeill Hurley was born February 7, 1912, at her parents' home in Boardman Township, Elkader, Iowa in Clayton County, and died January 18, 2005, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 11 days. Read More	Frances Cevera O"Brien, the daughter of Michael Raymond and Elizabeth Gertrude McNeill Hurley was born February 7, 1912, at her parents' home in Boardman Township, Elkader, Iowa in Clayton County, and died January 18, 2005, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 11 months and 11 days. Frances was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader. She attended kindergarten in Chicago, Ill., then finished grade school and graduated from St. Joseph's Parochial School in Elkader with the class of 1930. Fran graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, with a degree in Home Economics in 1934. During high school and college, she was a member of the women's basketball teams. She later took graduate studies at Mankato State University and the University of Iowa. She taught school in Whittemore, Iowa, Des Moines Township School near Rolfe, Iowa and Cylinder, Iowa. On June 24, 1942, She was united in marriage to Edmund J. O"Brien at St. Joseph's Church in Elkader. Six children were born to this union. Frances was a homemaker while she was raising her children, then resumed her teaching career at Sentral of Fenton, Iowa, Ringsted, Iowa and St. Peter and Paul's Catholic School in West Bend, Iowa. She served as principal for the Des Moines Township School and a short stint as its Superintendent. She also coached girls basketball and served as glee club music director. During her teaching career, she taught home economics, Latin, English, journalism, biology, music and fourth grade. Frances was a retired newspaper columnist, having written the column, "Everyday Echoes" for the Kosssuth County Advance. She had also written feature stories for the Fort Dodge Messenger, the Mason City Globe Gazette, Wallace Farmer Magazine, Emmetsburg and Whittemore papers. She had also been a featured columnist on the Jack Shelley Saturday morning radio program from time to time. Frances and Edmund lived on a century farm north of Whittemore, which they operated until Edmund retired. Edmund died January 20, 1986. Frances made her home in Whittemore until she moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon in August, 2003. Frances was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore. She served as an organist for the Catholic Daughter" of America and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Frances was a staunch Democrat and was a member of the Democrat Women, volunteered for many occasions, and was a member of several card clubs. She was preceded in death by her husband, infant son; Timothy Anthony O'Brien; her parents; and her sisters; Colette Hurley; Bernice and husband, Earl Barry; Gertrude and husband Harry White; and Agnes and husband, Hank Schott. She is survived by her children: Eileen O'Brien of Milwaukee, WI; Mary Michaeleen "Mickey" and husband, Les Goldstine of Omaha, NE; Kevin and wife, Eileen T. O'Brien of Davenport IA; Francine O'Brien and husband, Brian Andersen of Audubon, IA; and E. Daniel and wife Carol O'Brien of Cedar Rapids, IA; her grandchildren: Tim Godstine of Kansas City, MO; Kathleen O'Brien of Dallas, TX: Michael Goldstine of Minneapolis, MN; Bridget O'Brien of Wahsington, D.C.; Betsy Andersen of Blair, NE; Dan Andersen and Jim Andersen, both of Audubon, IA; Kevin J. O'Brien, Brendan O'Brien and Tim O'Brien, all of Davenport, IA; Katie O'Brien and Angie O'Brien, both of Cedar Rapids, IA; her great granddaughter, Chloe Davis of Blair, NE; her brother, Bernard (Bud) Hurley of Milwaukee, WI; her sister Angela Ann Hurley of Weston, FL; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
