Father John Pfeifer will officiate, and burial will be in Schafer Cemetery, Watford City. Rosary service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Watford City. Frances was born May 24, 1918, on the family farm near Croff, N.D., the daughter of Vincent and Annie (Brecker) Wherley. She was raised on the family farm and educated at Williams School. At the age of 17, Frances moved to Spokane, Wash., to work as a housekeeper for a doctor and his family. It was there that she met Mathias "Matt" Etl, and they were married Dec. 17, 1938. They worked on various dairy farms and fruit orchards in the Yakima, Wash., area until the early 1950s, when they moved their family to North Dakota. They made their home on the Wherley homestead east of Watford City, in the Johnson Corners area of McKenzie County. In 1961, after they lost three children in a drowning accident, they left the farm and moved to Watford City. Matt died Feb. 28, 1989, and Frances continued to live in Watford City until 1994. She then moved to Williston to be closer to her daughter, Barbara. It was very difficult for Frances to leave her home and friends in Watford City, but she was truly blessed to find a new home in Williston with wonderful neighbors who fast became cherished friends. Frances died peacefully at her home in Williston, Wednesday morning, July 6, 2005. Frances had a passion for gardening. She loved the feel of the soil in her hands and couldn't wait until spring to get out and start digging. She delighted in the beauty of her flowers and enjoyed sharing her garden produce with family and neighbors. After Matt passed away, Frances started wood crafting to pass the time during the long, winter months. It gave her great pleasure to give her craft projects away to family and friends. She participated in several craft shows in Watford City. Frances never passed up an opportunity to play whist or pinochle and also enjoyed bingo with her friend, Phyllis. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino to play the slot machines. Although Frances faced many challenges in her life, she always stayed strong and moved forward with determination and a smile on her face! She loved her family and friends dearly, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her! She is survived by two daughters, Betty Colson and her husband, Ronald of Puyallup, Wash., and Barbara Daniels and her husband, Mike of Williston; two sons, O'Dean Etl and his wife, Rose of Juneau, Ala., and Gary Etl and his wife, Addie of Hayward, Calif.; two grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Alice Etl of Yakima, Wash., Mary Mann and her husband, Kenneth of Dickinson, Agnes Williams of Billings, Mont., and Dorothy Nauditt of Spokane, Wash. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; five children, infant daughter, Betty, Linda, Cheryl, Bernadette, and Richard; one daughter-in-law, Katie; three sisters, Martha Heim, Helen Wherley, and Grace Wherley; and one brother, Lloyd Wherley. Friends may call Thursday from noon until 6 p.m. at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Williston; Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Fulkerson Funeral Home in Watford City and for one hour before service time at the church on Saturday.
