Mrs. Lavin passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in Clear Lake, SD. She was the widow of Mr. Ralph Lavin. Lavin, age 95, of Clear Lake, SD will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2006 in the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, SD. Mrs. Lavin passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in Clear Lake, SD. She was the widow of Mr. Ralph Lavin. Frances was born on December 2, 1910 in Bridgewater, SD, to Martin and Mayme E. (Peppmueller) Monahan. Shortly after her birth her mother became a widow and moved her family to Iowa. Frances went to school in Peterson and Doon, Iowa. While in school she helped her mother operate a hotel. She was a good basketball and kittenball player. She and her younger sister, as young women, used to hitch train rides to go to dances during the early days of Lawrence Welk. She watched his show faithfully until her death. After high school Frances accompanied her mother on their new career of being telephone switchboard operators for Central West Telephone Co. Her two sisters had left home earlier and her two brothers had passed away from complications of hemophilia. She and her mother settled in Gary, SD for five years before moving to Clear Lake. It was at this time she met a young barber named Ralph. She and Ralph eloped in Canton, SD on November 22, 1936. Her marriage was kept secret for a little while as she did not want to lose her job, as in those days not so many women worked after marriage. Ralph had his barber shop in the basement of the old bank building and continued to live at home with his widowed mother. Frances continued to live in and work at the telephone office with her mother. This office was located next to where ITC is today. During her working years in addition to working the switchboard, she was a clerk for Deuel Telephone. After they went on dial, she worked in the county treasurer's office, Walseth Abstract firm and after a number of years retired as a post office clerk in 1973. She and some friends had homemade food booths at the rodeo in it's early days. On June 4, 1981 Ralph passed away. Frances continued to live in her home until entering the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in 2003. Frances passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in the Deuel County Good Samaritan Home in Clear Lake at the age of 95 years, 7 months and 3 days. Frances always was an active church member in the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. At one time she was Sunday School Superintendent and was a life member of the United Methodist Women. She was a past member of the Eastern Star. Most recently she was a member of the "quilters"-starting out with fine quilting and as her eyes gave out helped with tying quilts, when she no longer was able to do that she cut squares and most recently at the nursing home cut up pieces of clothing so it could be marked into squares. She participated in everything she could at the nursing home and was the Queen Mum of their Red Hatters. She will be remembered for her quick wit and friendliness. Frances loved to do needlework and did so until her eyesight failed. She loved to cook, bake, take long walks, read, do crossword puzzles, travel to see her sisters, play cards, enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved her friends and staff at Good Samaritan and loved visitors, especially children. Frances is survived by her daughter, Sandra Bendt and her husband Don, Clear Lake, SD; 2 grandchildren Richard (Shawna)Bendt and Mary Bendt; 3 great grandchildren: Morgan, AJ and Lavin Bendt, several nephews, nieces and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; parents, 2 sisters Velma Thomson and Leona Rohrbaugh, 2 brothers LeRoy and Leslie and one grandson, Gregory Bendt. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake, SD. Ayyangements by Houseman-Eng Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD.
