She was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Nickerson, the daughter of Lloyd Glenn and Minnie Pleasant Gantz Hill. She was a graduate of Plevna High School in 1940, and Emporia State Teachers College in 1942. She was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Nickerson, the daughter of Lloyd Glenn and Minnie Pleasant Gantz Hill. She was a graduate of Plevna High School in 1940, and Emporia State Teachers College in 1942. She was a lifetime Reno County resident, living in the Nickerson, Plevna and the Hutchinson communities. She was a homemaker and a farmwife. She belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. She had been a Sunday School teacher and treasurer for the Huntsville Church for 20 years, and had been a classroom teacher for six years. On March 3, 1948, she married Scott B. Hester in Plevna. He died March 6, 1999. Survivors include: their children and spouses, Cynthia and Frank Gassmann, Garden Plain, Karen and Byron Davidson, Wichita, Michael and Mary Hester, Plevna, and Keith and Raimy Hester, Hutchinson; a brother, Grant Hill, Hutchinson; three sisters, Mildred Service, Overland Park, Muriel Thode, South Hutchinson, and Velma Fox, Wichita; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Hill. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday Nov. 7, 2008, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Pat Ault Duell presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Private family graveside service will be in Pleasant View Cemetery. She was born on October 3, 1923 to Minnie Plesant (Gantz) and Lloyd Glenn Hill. Frances was the second born of five children. She grew up in Huntsville, KS and attended Huntsville Grade School. Frances graduated from Nickerson High School at the age of sixteen, and went on to college at Emporia State University. She earned her teaching certificate and began teaching at eighteen years of age at Andre School. This was a one room school house where she taught first through eighth grade. Frances married her childhood sweetheart, Scott Hester after he returned home from fighting in WWII. They were married on March 3, 1948. Frances and Scott had four children. They owned a farm and would work the land together. Frances was a devoted wife and mother. She left teaching to raise her children. She was a lovely cook and would sow the children's clothing. Frances had a large vegetable garden during the summer as well. She would harvest and can these vegetables to be enjoyed by the family during the rest of the year. Frances would also grow enough vegetables to be sold at the local markets in Hutchinson, KS. Along with the fresh produce, Frances would sell eggs and cream to these local markets. Frances was very hard working and strong willed. She thought music to be an important part of education for her children. They all went on to university and earned teaching degrees. Frances was a very supportive of her children. She was a great listener as well. Frances enjoyed serving at the local church in Huntsville, KS. Frances was a Sunday School teacher at the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years. Frances also was the treasurer of the Women's Society of Christian Service for over twenty years. She enjoyed serving in these ways. Frances and Scott were married for fifty-one years, Scott preceded her in death. Frances went home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2008. Frances is a loving soul who is dearly missed.
