BITTNER DIES FROM BURNS Fatally Burned on Saturday the Wife of Bellevue's Mayor Passes Away Sunday Morning Another tragedy cast a pall of sorrow over Bellevue on Saturday, when Mrs. G. J. Bittner was fatally burned in her home here. Mrs. Bittner, who preferred her range for baking, attempted to start a fire with kerosene and while it will never be known just what happened, her clothing caught fire, and before help could reach her, she was terribly burned. She managed to call her husband, Mayor Bittner, at his office, who rushed to her aid and she was taken to Moulton Hospital where Dr. J. C. Dennison did everything possible for her, but the shock and burns were too severe and she passed away Sunday about 9:30 a.m. Frances Ernst was born in Bellevue on March 9, 1875, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ernst. She grew to womanhood in the community and was married on August 13, 1896 to Henry Martin, a railroad conductor, who died a hero of the terrible Washington Mills wreck on the narrow gauge in February, 1907. On Sept. 29, 1915, she became the wife of Grover J. Bittner who survives her. She also leaves three brothers, Ben Ernst of Dubuque, John and Louis of Bellevue. Her parents, two brothers, William and Joseph and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie McKinney preceded her in death. The last rites were held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's Catholic church with the Rev. J. L. Linkenmeyer conducting the solemn requiem mass. Father J. Bohr of Lamont acted as deacon and the Rev. J. Kissling as sub-deacon. The Rev. Linkenmeyer preached the very consoling eulogy. The six nephews of Mrs. Bittner carried all that was mortal to the last resting place in the Catholic cemetery, and were Pvt. Lawrence Ernst, of Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; Edmund Ernst, Bellevue; Ardell Ernst, Springville; Joseph Ernst, Chicago; Merlin McKinney, Dubuque and Clarence Badger of Dubuque. The members of the city council and city employees acted as honorary pallbearers, while the members of Rescue Hose Co., of which Mayor Bittner was chief for many years, attended in a body. The mass of flowers and the large gathering of sorrowing friends were a silent tribute to the love and respect in which Mrs. Bittner was held. Mrs. Bittner was a woman who was content and happiest in her own home where she was a gracious hostess and welcomed her friends with real hospitality. Nieces and nephews were made to feel that her home was theirs whenever they wished and she will be greatly missed by neighbors and friends alike. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph's Catholic church. Fate seemed to have a tragic death in store for Mrs. Bittner, as she has been the victim of three accidents, prior to the one which resulted in her death. When a child she was badly burned when in some manner her clothes caught fire while she was playing with a group of children. Later in life, she was badly burned when in attempting to light the oven of a bottled gas stove, an explosion occurred, and a few years ago she was very seriously injured in an automobile collision. Ernst and daughter Kay, Springville; Mrs. Anne Ernst, Mrs. Marie Rue, Chicago; Miss Berdette Ernst, Mrs. Margaret Baumhover, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Ernst, Mrs. Josie Ernst, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Badger and son Jimmie, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin McKinley, Dubuque; Pvt. L. D. Ernst, Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; Mrs. Sam Gordon, Nevin, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wertz, Miss Margaret Boble, Dubuque; Mrs. Perry J. Walsh, Washington D.C.; Mrs. Gladys Prandy Beminger, and two children, Chicago; Oscar Niemeyer, Mrs. Lena Niemeyer, Miss Abdulia Niemeyer, Guttenberg; George Most, Hurt Most, Otto P. Arduser, Wm. Clemens, Art Berdall and Joe Eichen, of Dubuque.
