Nelson of Carroll will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Mrs. Nelson, 92, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Carroll Health Center nursing home in Carroll. Rev. Timothy Schott will celebrate the Mass. Lectors will be Kathy Schleisman and Karmen Hotchkiss. Gift bearers will be Alex, Jessica, Andrew and Adam Schleisman. Eucharistic ministers will be Bernice Bluml, Margaret Lilla, and Dennis Schleisman. Casket bearers will be Bob Wilson, David Nelson, Alex Wittry, Steve Sweeney, Ben Wittry and Ben Nelson. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will form an honor guard at the church. Friends may call after 2:30 Friday afternoon and there will be a 3 p.m. rosary recited by the CDA and Legion of Mary at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. A Christian wake service by the parish will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at he funeral home. A daughter of John and Frances (Daeges) Ocken, she was born Feb. 4, 1910, at Arcadia. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul Schools in Carroll and St. Francis School in Maple River. Following schooling, she was employed by the Mort Collison family of Carroll, and lived the rest of her life in Carroll. She and Knute Nelson were married Sept. 6, 1933, at St. Joseph Church in Carroll. Mrs. Nelson was a homemaker and seamstress who worked in the family business, Nelson Woodwork and Upholstery until 1990. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, its Ladies Guild, Resurrection Choir and prayer group, as well as of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Legion of Mary and the Flower and Garden Club. Mrs. Nelson enjoyed cooking, gardening, volunteer work and needlework. Survivors include seven children, Bonnie Rausch of San Clemente, Calif.; Larry Nelson and his wife, Kay, of Carroll; Paul Nelson and his wife, Joan, of Bella Vista, Ark.; Karen Sweeney of Carroll; Jane Wittry and her husband, Ken, of Fort Madison;, Tom Nelson and his wife, Becky, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; and Teresa Offutt and her husband, Greg, of Durango, Colo.; 31 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; two sisters, Annabelle Schettler of Carroll and Rosemary Krieg of Independence; a brother, Tony Ocken and his wife, Vi, of Mesa, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Rita Ocken of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Norma Jean Ocken of Aurora, Colo. Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Knute in November 1970; her step-mother, Thresa Dentlinger-Ocken; a step-daughter, Norma Jean Nelson; two sons-in-law, Eugene Sweeney and Dean Rausch; six brothers, Paul, Clete, Lawrence, and Joseph Ocken, and twins John and Joseph Ocken in infancy; three sisters, Loretta Ocken, Angle Loew-Wilhelm and Marie Kramer; and siblings-in-law, Mary Ocken, Joe Schettler, Russ Krieg, Jake Loew, Otto Wilhelm, and Ben Kramer.
