Funeral services will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Marie Lykken from Hospice of Siouxland will officiate. Francis Edward Gaffey was born May 24, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of John “Jack” and Edith (LeMoine) Gaffey. Bud was raised on a farm in Woodbury County, Iowa, where he attended country school. Later he moved with his family to Crawford County, Iowa. As young boy, Bud always liked to drive and run tractors and trucks. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1945. He served his country during WWII while stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1947. Following his discharge, he moved back to the area before settling in Le Mars and driving truck for Phil Groetken. He was united in marriage to Darlene Hollandor in May of 1950 in Denison, Iowa. They made their home in Le Mars. After driving truck for Phil Groetken, Bud went to work for Swift and Company in Sioux City for 13 years. Following its closing, he went to work for the Plymouth County Roads Department as a heavy-equipment operator. Bud worked for the county for over 22 years before retiring. Darlene passed away in May 1983. Bud later married Esther Bohlke on October 6, 1984, in Remsen, Iowa. She passed away June 21, 1991. Bud continued to make his home in Le Mars until moving to the Abbey in Le Mars on April 9, 2015. Bud was a member of the Wasmer Post 241 of the American Legion in Le Mars. Through the years, he enjoyed dancing, listening to country & western music, boating, fishing, camping, and gardening. Survivors include a son: Gale (Debbie) Gaffey of Holcomb, KS; a son: Ron Gaffey of Le Mars; 4 grandchildren: Sheila (Shane) Clanton of Garden City, KS, Charise Gaffey of Garden City, Austin Gaffey of Fort Worth, TX, and Ashley Gaffey (fiancé, Don Williams) of Merrill, IA; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister: Margaret (Tom) Henrich of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; his wife, Esther; and two brothers: Robert (Belva) Gaffey and Gerald “Joe” (Jolene) Gaffey.
