Bayard Advocate - Thursday, February 26, 1914 - Mr. Francis E. Lyon went into Cobb's Shoe Store in Jefferson last Thursday to change a pair of shoes for his wife and succumbed to the grim Reaper. He had been a sufferer from heart trouble, which gained the mastery of him while on duty. Francis Eugene Lyon was born in Schenectady, New York, October 11, 1848. He came to Iowa in 1868 and was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Adamson in 1872. To this union were born ten children, of whom four and the wife and mother still survive him. In 1887 the family moved to Omaha. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Lyon come back to Greene county and made their home with their son, C.D. Lyon and wife. The deceased was 65 years, 5 months, and 8 days old at the time of his death, Feb. 1914. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Mrs. E.H. Adamson home, conducted by Rev. Miller, burial at Willow cemetery. JEFFERESON BEE - Wednesday, February 25th, 1914 - Death in any form is a dread visitor, but it is more terrible when it comes under such circumstances as attended the passing of Mr. Frank Lyon, in Cobb's shoe store last Thursday afternoon. Mr. Lyon, who lived with his son Atlee Lyon in north Jefferson, drove up with the family horse, letting his wife out at Cobb's store. He went and hitched the horse and came into the store, where Mrs. Lyon was having shoes fitted. He sat down in a chair and complained of a severe pain his stomach, but said he had suffered from it before and that it would pass away. His wife, sitting a few feet away, asked him a question, and he said: "don't talk to me now; I am sick." No sooner had the words left his lips than his head fell forward and he became unconscious. His wife sprang to his side and told Mr. Cobb get a physician. While Mr. Cobb was telephoning for help, he breathed his last. Dr. C.D. Enfield arrived in few moments, and pronounced Mr. Lyon dead. Coroner Ben Hamilton was also summoned, and decided that there was no occasion for an inquest, as death was clearly due to heart disease. The wife's grief and her efforts to call her husband back from the shadows was most touching and pitiful. Mr. Lyon came to Jefferson about a year ago. He formerly lived at Audubon, where he was in the plumbing business, and prior to that lived for some years on a farm in Willow township. He was in his 66th year, and while not well known here was a man much respected. The remains were taken to Willow township for burial Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Pangborn, of Bayard, the latter a sister of Mrs. Lyon, and a son, John Lyon, of Harlan, came to Jefferson and accompanied the local relatives on their sad errand. Mr. Lyon had been suffering for some time from a disease of the heart, and his death in some sudden fashion had been predicted by physicians. He leaves besides the wife, three sons and a daughter.
