He was born Dec. 7, 1932, on a homestead southeast of Broadus. The son of Thomas Fowler and Helene Wakefield Wetherelt, he attended country grade school and graduated from Powder River County High School, lettering all four years in football and basketball. Following his marriage to Vera Lee Smith, he worked for area ranches and the highway department as a 'highway engineer' throughout eastern Montana. In 1966 he leased a ranch on the Powder River, where he raised sheep and cattle until 1973, when he purchased a ranch on Rosebud Creek. In 1976 he went into partnership on a sawmill where they sold railroad ties. In 1980 he sold the ranch and sawmill and went to work for Rosebud County as a machine operator. During his years with the county, Fran was able to devote more time to the poetry. In 1992 he published his book, 'Homestead Heritage' and attended many cowboy poetry gatherings. In 1993 Fran married Agnes Schwan at Miles City. In December 1994, he retired from Rosebud County and they made their home in Miles City. Fran and Agnes' time together was very brief -- filled with dancing, attending poetry gatherings, golfing, hunting and most of all visiting family and friends. He enjoyed the West and had an eye that saw the beauty in landscapes, wildlife and everyday life. He was a member of Cursillo, Jaycees, Forsyth Country Club and Federated Church of Forsyth, where he served as a choir member for 12 years and participated in the cantata for several seasons. All who knew him appreciated his gentle, laid-back, accepting, loving manner. His humor and one-liners will not be forgotten. Francis was highly regarded by his family as a patriarch and role model. He lived his life always with passion and perseverance. He was loved as a spouse, father, grandfather, brother, brother, uncle, stepfather, brother-in-law, pappy as well as by a vast number of his personal friends. Through his illness the Lord was a special friend and guide. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, of Miles City; two sons, Mark and his wife Debra Wetherelt of Cohagen, Colin and his wife Susie Wetherelt of Searcy, Ark.; one daughter, Rena and her husband Ronald Watne of Helena; two sisters, Mary Irion Hodges of Broadus and Marilyn (Blondie) and her husband Larry Woolston of Broadus; one brother, Robert and his wife Ebba Wetherelt of Soldotna, Alaska; one stepson, John P. Schwan and his wife Laurie of Aberdeen, S.D.; three stepdaughters, Jodi Schwan of Wolf Point, Mary Beth and her husband Scott Townsend and Annette Schwan, both of Aberdeen; as well as a very devoted sister-in-law, Evelyn Merck of Miles City; and last but not least, his very special grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Fran's family and friends will gather Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City for a celebration of his life. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus with Rev. Robert Thaden officiating.
