Description	:	Francis G. Purvis, age 84, of Deep River, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his home following an extended illness. Francis Gene Purvis was born April 3, 1926 in Moravia, the son of LeRoy and Essie Hiatt Purvis. He attended the Moravia schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War ll from 1944-1946 stationed in the European Theatre. Francis married Vera VanDorin on August 18, 1946 in Centerville. Purvis, age 84, of Deep River, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at his home following an extended illness. Francis Gene Purvis was born April 3, 1926 in Moravia, the son of LeRoy and Essie Hiatt Purvis. He attended the Moravia schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War ll from 1944-1946 stationed in the European Theatre. Francis married Vera VanDorin on August 18, 1946 in Centerville. She died in 1975. Francis was employed as a farm hand for many area farmers. He then went to work for the Poweshiek County Road Maintenance, retiring in 1990. Francis married Edna Mae Burke Stoker on August 28, 1976 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Victor. Francis was a member of the Morrison Schrader American Legion Post No. 296 in Deep River and the Guernsey United Methodist Church. He attended St. John's Lutheran Church, Victor, since 1976. Francis enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He raised hunting dogs and miniature horses. Those left to honor his memory are his children, Carl Purvis(Milly)of Guernsey, Joyce Meldrem(Dennis)of Deep River, Sandra Evans(Marvin)of Guernsey, Bobby Purvis(Mary Ann)of Chaptico, Md., Mary Maschmann(Michael)of Brooklyn, Deborah Micheel(Ray)of Marshalltown and Edythe Kuntz of Brooklyn; 16 grandchildren, 23 greatgrandchildren; and four siblings, Floyd Purvis(Maxine)of Grinnell, Ferrell Purvis, Freeman Purvis(Mary)and Florene Purvis Brown all of Centerville. Also surviving are many relatives and friends and his fox terrier Trixie. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Vera and Edna Mae, a sister Frona June and a brother Forest. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Tuesday, June 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Victor, with the Rev. David MacKain officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemtery in Moravia. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm today at Kloster Funeral Home in Brooklyn with the family present from 5-8 pm. A memorial fund has been established.
