The following is taken from the Descendants of Franz (Frank) Rasenbeck: Frank and Catherine emigrated from Bohemia in 1848 to Cleveland, Ohio, and the same year to St. Lucas, Iowa. The following is taken from the Descendants of Franz (Frank) Rasenbeck: Frank and Catherine emigrated from Bohemia in 1848 to Cleveland, Ohio, and the same year to St. Lucas, Iowa. Frank purchased 40 acres of land in section 5 and 5 acres in section 8 for $50.00 from Anthony and Francell Stathel on July 10, 1856 in Auburn Township, Fayette, Iowa. He purchased another 10 acres from Stathel on Oct. 20. 1860 in section 10 Auburn Township. This was the big Woods east of St. Lucas. In the early history of St. Luke church in St. Lucas, Iowa, it states that in 1855 Theodore Rusabeck, one of the pioneers of the parish, contributed to a special collection for the church. He was probably the father or a brother of Frank. Frank died April 30, 1863 in a prairie fire while trying to save his cattle. The following article was written many years after his death by William Brueckel editor of the Waucoma Sentinel. Frank Rasenbeck had been on a 5 day trip with his oxen team delivering a load of wheat to the market at McGregor for which he received 40 cents a bushel and dressed pork which brought him $2.00 per hundred. He returned home with flour, sugar and medicines and arriving home went to rest for his journey. At daybreak he was awakened by the crackling sound of burning grass and smoke which had entered the open window. Arising from his bed he saw the firmament in flames. His wife Catherine had left the cattle out to graze in search for corn left in the field. Frank holding the hand of his daughter Frances hurried out to the prairie on fire to chase the cattle home. None were in sight. He took his jacket off and hit the ground with it to kill the flames still searching for the cattle. His clothing caught on fire and he sent little Frances home for help. In a little while he was engulfed in an ocean of fire, there was no way to return to safety. His whole body became a torch of flame, he suffered the pains of scorching flesh, smoke entered his lungs, he became dizzy and fell to the ground and death came in mercy to end his life. His wife who had witnessed the horror, unable to help found in tears the crisp burned body of her husband on April 20, 1863 in a prairie field near Festina (at St. Lucas.) At the time of his death Frank owned 40 acres farmland and 15 acres of timber plus one yoke of oxen, 6 cows, one wagon, and $15.00 in gold. After the death of Frank, John Pitzenberger, his son in law, was name administrator of the estate and guardian of the minor child Frances. On Sept. 7, 1877 John Pitzenberger states in his final report that said child reached her majority and received $880.00. Catherine Rasenbeck sold the 40 acres in section 5 on April 12, 1865. Catherine married Herman Hinker (B. 1813). They were living in St. Lucas in 1891. After Catherine had a stroke she went to live with her daughter, Frances, and Martin Bouska. She died January 22, 1905 according to the records at St. Luke Church at St. Lucas, Iowa.
