Description	:	Francis Henry was the first white child born in Galena, his parents being William Henry and Rachel McQuigg. Henry took up mining at a young age. He was appointed a Lieutenant of the U.S. Dragoons and fought in the Mexican War under General Winfield Scott. He studied law after the war but returned to mining in 1851, moving to California then Oregon where he married Eliza B. Henry on May 14, 1857, in Yamhill County. He was appointed a Lieutenant of the U.S. Dragoons and fought in the Mexican War under General Winfield Scott. Henry was mayor of Olympia (1870-71) and was a delegate to and served on the committees which drafted the declaration of rights at the Washington constitutional convention in 1878 and the statehood convention of 1889. In addition to his three terms in the Territorial Legislature, he was a probate judge, city treasurer, supreme court clerk, secretary of the Washington Pioneer Association, and president of the Thurston County Bar Association. Below is an excerpt from a poem he wrote in the 1870's called "The Old Settler". The poem was later used by Seattle restauranteur Ivar Haglund. And now that I'm used to the climate, I think if man ever found A place to be peaceful and quiet, That spot is on Puget Sound. No longer the slave of ambition, I laugh at the world and its shams, As I think of my pleasant condition Surrounded by acres of clams.
