Francis J. was born May 12, 1923, to August and Theresa (Streit) Schumacher in Ipswich, S.D. He attended Holy Cross Grade School and Ipswich High School, graduating in 1942. After high school, he entered the military service (Army). His basic training was in Camp Adair in Oregon. During World War II, he was shipped overseas to Africa, Sicily, Italy and Yugoslavia, and served as a platoon sergeant. Fritz was injured in battle while in Italy, and returned home in 1945. He then entered college at South Dakota State University and played football for four years. He was the captain of the 1949 conference champions. In 1948 and 1949, Fritz took part in the first state college organized wrestling program in South Dakota. During the 1946 Hobo Day homecoming game, Fritz was injured and while hospitalized, he met Lois Halpin, one of his nurses. On April 11, 1947, Fritz and Lois were married at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Brookings, S.D. Their first child, Roger, was born while Fritz and Lois lived in Brookings. Upon graduation from SDSU in 1950, they moved to Aberdeen, S.D. Their family grew with the addition of their daughter, Carol, and then a son Tom. They raised their family in Aberdeen, except for part of a year living in Puyallup, Wash., in the late '50s. His first job after college was working for Winston Newel Co. (Super Valu) in the purchasing department. Fritz worked at several jobs for a few years after leaving Winston Newel, and spent the majority of his career with The Paper Company as a salesman. He received many honors and awards for his hard work and dedication. He retired in 1988, and returned briefly to help train replacements for his sales routes. Fritz helped organize the first officiating organization in the Aberdeen area for high school sports and college activities. He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years, and also a lifetime member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He was a former member of the Moose and Lions Clubs, and at the time of his death, still currently a member of the Eagles Club. Fritz was a former Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the first president of the St. Mary's Grade School parent-teacher association. Sports were an important part of Fritz' life. In addition to his high school and college sports, he was active in Aberdeen softball. He was one of the founders of the Roncalli Booster Club, and was always available to drive team players to out of town events. This continued even after his own children had graduated from Roncalli. Grateful for having shared his life are his son Roger (Cheri) Schumacher of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his daughter, Carol Dormady of Aberdeen, S.D.; his son Tom (Leslie) Schumacher of Tacoma, Wash.; his grandsons: Ben (Shannon) Schumacher and Andy (Alicia) Schumacher, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his great-grandchildren: Jordan Muser and Lincoln Schumacher, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his brother, Roger Schumacher of Aberdeen, S.D.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; an infant baby daughter; his sisters: Ethel, Eldora and Gertrude; his brother, Ray; and his son-in-law, Larry. Fritz request memorials to the Roncalli Booster Club in lieu of flowers. Published in the Aberdeen News on 9/12/2007.
