Description	:	Francis L. Roberts Francis LeRoy Roberts was born In Jackson, Minn., on July 19, 1893, to Alfred C. and Alma Bowen Roberts. He graduated from the Jackson High School in 1913, having been active in high school and church activities. For 2 years he taught country school, and 3 years later graduated from Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy. He graduated in 1935 from College of Medicine with honors,... Read More	Francis L. Roberts Francis LeRoy Roberts was born In Jackson, Minn., on July 19, 1893, to Alfred C. and Alma Bowen Roberts. He graduated from the Jackson High School in 1913, having been active in high school and church activities. For 2 years he taught country school, and 3 years later graduated from Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy. He practiced osteopathy in Spirit Lake for several years; then, desirous of more training, studied one year at Iowa State College at Ames and 5 more years at the State University of Iowa. He graduated in 1935 from College of Medicine with honors, being elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Honorary Medical Fraternity. He interned in Lincoln General Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska. Then he returned to Spirit Lake, where he practiced medicine until his health failed. After a year of vacation, his health was restored and he took a position on the Ogallala Sioux reservation at Pine Ridge, S. D., partly because of his deep interest in Indians and partly because he would not be called on for night work, but in less than a year his health again failed and he had to retire. The next October (1951), he had a cerebral hemorrhage with resultant paralysis of his left side. In December, he and his wife moved to Corona, Calif. to be near their daughter, Mrs. Norman Stevens. In 1914 he was married to Mary Price of Spirit Lake. They have two daughters, Mrs. Jack Musgrove (Mary) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mrs. Norman Stevens (Velma) of Corona Calif. He is survived by his wife, both daughters, two son-in-laws, his step-mother, Mrs. Louise Roberts of St. Paul, Minn., a sister, Mrs. Erick Stohl of Bellingham, Wash., three granddaughters, Jean Musgrove of Des Moines and Marilyn and Janet Stevens of Corona, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Roberts had a life-long interest in the out-of-doors and had a national reputation as a naturalist. He was a charter member of the old Iowa Conservation Association, one of the first conservation organizations in the state. He was past President of the Iowa Ornithologists Union, Consulting Biologist of the National Emergency Conservation Committee, former President of the Governing Board of the Lakeside Laboratory of the State University of Iowa, founder and sponsor of the Spirit Lake Nature Study Camera Club, and first president of the first Spirit Lake chapter of the Izaac Walton League. For several years, in connection with the U. S. Biological Survey, he was the most active bird bander in Iowa. He had a very extensive rock collection, much of which has been donated to the Spirit Lake schools. He has written extensively on natural history subjects for magazines of national circulation. He has also published several articles in medical journals. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, since boyhood, until he moved to California. As there was no church of that denomination in Corona, he joined the First Congregational Church there. He was a member of Twilight Chapter A. P. & A. M. at Spirit Lake and was on the National Research Council of the Masonic Lodge. After his stroke, he was honored by being made a life member of the Dickinson County Medical Association, the Iowa State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Cardiology. He died May 20 [1957] at his home in Corona , Calif. as the result of a closure of an artery in the heart. He was 63 years and 10 months old. Short services were held In Corona on Wednesday. He had known that Indian friends on the Pine Ridge Reservation hoped to have him adopted into the Ogallala Sioux Tribe. On Wednesday, a letter came from Herbert Holy Elk, a member of the Tribal Council, saying the adoption ceremony was planned for July and that Dr. Roberts was to be given the Indian name "Wanblee Toka hay," meaning Leading Eagle. Among the Sioux, the eagle is held in a sort of reverence, as being the creature that flies closest to God. In the Sun Dance, a ceremony of prayer, whistles made of eagle bones are constantly blown, to call the eagles to carry the prayers to the Great Spirit. *Published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, June 6, 1957, page 14.
