Bogue, age 88, whose death occurred Wednesday evening at 10:25 o'clock at his home 5 1/2 miles southeast of Sharpsville. For some time this splendid man had been in failing health, his once rugged constitution breaking some time ago, but his condition had only been serious for the past month. Funeral services for this pioneer will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Dunkard church west of Windfall, with burial following in the Nevada cemetery. Francis M. Bogue, better known to his many friends as Frank, was born August 22, 1845, in the heart of the Cherokee territory in Missouri, at a point known as Platt Purchase, at a time when it was no uncommon thing for the Indians to go on a rampage, scalping, butchering and burning everything in their path. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Riley Bogue, were fearless people who had lived among the Indians long enough to be thoroughly familiar with their customs. Riley Bogue, during his long life of eighty years, often related many of his harrowing experiences with the Indians, one of the worst of which was the time when he and his brother were summoned from the Platt river where they were fishing to assist a neighbor woman who was being pursued by an Indian, flourishing a tomahawk. Both men used their guns to a good advantage, one bullet severing the savage's jugular vein. The Bogue Brothers then returned home with the unfortunate woman, only to find that her infant child who had been asleep in its cradle inside the cabin, had been dropped by the Indians into a kettle of boiling soap, over which, the lady had been working when the marauders arrived. Frank Bogue was perhaps the only person in this county who could boast of the fact of having been captured by Indians, this event occurring when he was a child of two years. Mr. and Mrs. Riley Bogue, and other pioneer settlers of Missouri, decided to form a caravan and return to Indiana, Rush county being their objective. As they entered the most dangerous part of their journey, they made a corral of their wagons at nightfall, placing their horses inside the enclosure for the night. One night, the Indians stealthily entered the camp, and stole the sleeping Francis from his parents wagon. Fortunately for the group, the men had planned to break camp before dawn, in order to make more headway on their journey during the following day and as the camp began to awaken the astounding crime was discovered. Riley Bogue, left instructions for preparations to be made to leave camp at once, and then set off alone to retrieve his son. In his brief search he located the camp and was elated to find his son. The Indiana had evidently Francis (unreadable due to blurring). They were sleeping sufficiently sound for him to find his son and return to camp with him, the white party then making extreme haste to leave that location. Aside from the suffering they experienced from a water famine, the remainder of their journey though Missouri was and uneventful one, and in 1864, the Bogue family settled in Howard county. In 1870, Frank Bogue purchased the farm where he lived the remainder of his life and where his death occurred. He was first married to Miss Mary Angela Dugan and she died at an early age. In 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Ellen Garner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Garner of Kokomo, this being his second marriage. He and his second wife enjoyed 54 years of married life before her death, they being quite active in church and social affairs at all times, and they were a couple who could always be relied upon to assist in times of need. Nine children were born to this union, two of whom are deceased, they being Laura, wife of Frank Richey, near Kokomo, and Lula, wife of John Fennell, near Windfall. Surviving are the children, Fred Bogue of Summitville, Jesse, and Sam Bogue of Windfall, Lee Bogue of Hemlock, Ernest, who resided with his father, Alfred of Tipton, Anna, wife of Jesse Rogers of Rock Prairie and Nick Bogne of Windfall. The latter was Mr. Bogue's son by his first marriage. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, half-sisters and half-brothers.
