Francis Owen Garrity was born February 8, 1918 at rural DeWitt, Iowa, the son of Hugh Owen and Mary Catherine (Costello) Garrity. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1936. Frank married Eileen Dolphin on October 12, 1943 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Denver, Colorado. The couple farmed at rural DeWitt, and continue to reside there in their retirement. Frank was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and the Knights of Columbus. He loved farming and the land that he worked. He was one of the first farmers in the area to farm using terraces and was well known for his fine heard of Angus cattle. He did enjoy traveling and his grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Eileen; a son, John F. “J.F.” Garrity and his wife, Joan, Coralville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Lisa Garrity, London, England; Colleen Garrity, akeville, New York; Heather Garrity, Chicago, Illinois; Robert Garrity and his wife, Maria, Coralville. Preceding Frank in death were his parents, five sisters, Mary Francis Garrity, Mary Therese Fennesy, Mary Ellen Connel, Camilla Lillis and Ruth McGarry, as well as a brother, Raymond Garrity. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Monday, September 1, 2003. Rosary 4:00 p.m. and Parish Vigil Service 6:00 p.m. Funeral Liturgy 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness officiating. Interment at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt. Pallbearers will be Robert Garrity, Raymond Garrity, Patrick Hunter, William Lillis, William Bloom, and Jim McGarry.
