He was born Aug. 10, 1919 and was a tobacco farmer near the Patrick-Society Hill area. was married to Hazel Deyo Culpepper on Dec. 12, 1942, and she survives him. In the community he served on the Harris Creek School Board, the Chesterfield County ASC County Committee and the Chesterfield County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. A lifelong member of Mt. Olviet Baptist Church, he served on the Board of Deacons, as superintendent of Sunday School and on numerous committees over the years. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, George Lucas Byrd and Mary Musgrove (Mamie) Farr; brothers, Lucas Etheride (Geneva Clark, William Oatzel (Elizabeth Winburn) and Harvey Hoke (Lola Mae Dixon); and sister, Helen Wynoon; three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephew survive him; and a daughter, Sandra Merle Byrd, 16, died in 1963, of complications due to cerebral palsy. Survivors are seven children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Vivan A. Byrd, 56, and special friend, Darrell Chambers of Ann Arbor, MI and her children, Jonathan D. Schwartz, of Orlando Fla. and Michael (wife, Puri-Yu) Schwartz of Chicago, Ill; Francis Stanley Byrd, 54, and special friend, Mardy Jackson of Society Hill; his son, Matthew Stanley Byrd of Columbia; Lee Odell Byrd, 53, wife, Annette Snipes Byrd of Florence and their children, Crystel Leigh of Florence and Christopher Lee (wife, Elizabeth, sons, Brandon and Jonah) of Surfside Beach; Sharon Byrd Laureti, 47, of Shelton, Conn. and her children, David Bradley and Jessica Margaret of New York, N.Y.; Katen Byrd Mitchell, 47, husband David Mitchell and their son, Brian Mitchell of Morton, Pa.; Orinda J. Christoph, 45, husband, Richard Thomas Christoph and their children, George Andrew and Erica McKay, of Madison, South Dakota.
