Between the stark reality of these brief lines there lies unsaid a story of dedication to the cause of Christian living, cooperative action and youth education scarcely equalled in our experience. For Wilbur Drown, cooperative employee, long time educational director for the former Farmers Union State Exchange and our co-worker in many a Farmers Union Youth Camp was in fact and practice and evangelist and a crusader for the good and the beautiful. As we listened to the brief tribute paid him at the Memorial Service in Central City we were overwhelmed by the thought that for Wilbur himself this was not an end but instead a moving on to a new and more challenging assignment. Somewhere beyond these boundaries of time and space the unquenchable exuberance of his spirit is now under the direction of a higher command. For a brief moment we were privileged to call him dear friend and fellow cooperator. The hour and day of our first meeting escapes us now but that in its own way reveals the timelessness of philosophy that marked his mortal journey. For here without question walked one who recognized no cleaveage between the sometimes painful, sometimes rewarding present and the mystery of that world that lies beyond. Two worlds there well may be but for Wilbur it was but one life with a mission that spanned them both. Truly here was a builder who gave of himself and his many talents freely in the firm belief that the structure he was helping to build would endure thru time and beyond. Only those with little faith and lesser vision will say "he is gone", or where one Wilbur Drown labored a hundred will rise up to carry on that in which he believed. To this fact can there be stronger witness than the youngsters who loved him so well, who took into their own lives and hearts his teachings. Could there be better witness than the adults who because of his efforts were moved to greater devotion and dedication toward the task in which he himself so strongly believed. Only in a superficial sense could we say "Wilbur Drown is gone" for in truth a part of his spirit will live for always in the goals toward which he labored so valiantly and in the lives he touched with enthusiasm as he passed along the way. -- ELTON L.
