END AND Fresno Morning Republican (Fresno, California) July 18, 1920 (Sunday) "YOUNG SOLDIER IS SUMMONED. Francis W. Eckles Dies at Porterville Following Long Illness. Porterville, July 17. Francis Willford Eckles, 20, of this city and a veteran of the great war, died at the home of his parents in this city yesterday following a lingering illness of several weeks. Eckles was born in Tulare, but moved with his parents to Porterville sevral years ago. He was well and favorably known here, and was a member of the local post of the American Legion. Shortly after the outbreak of the war young Eckles, then a boy of 17, enlisted in the Marine Corps and served until his discharge in the spring of 1919. The funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Congregational church at 3 o'clock, and will be in charge of the local post of the Legion. The members have been requested to assemble at Legion hall at 2:30 o'clock and to march to the church in a body. Burial will follow in the Home of Peace Cemetery. Eckles is survied by his father and mother, Frank G. [Francis Asbury Eckles] and Mrs. Eckles [nee Blanche Barbara Baker] and by a younger brother [Charles Graham Eckles], all of whom live in Porterville."
