Reed, 67, retired Independence businessman and former Buchanan county supervisor were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 17, at the First United Presbyterian church in Independence. The Rev. Elmor Ward, pastor officiated and burial was in the Madison cemetery near Aurora. Mr. Reed died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at the People's hospital, Independence, where he had been a patient since Oct. 2. He had been in ill health since early this year. He was born Oct. 12, 1895 at Winthrop, the son of Victor. M.and Lottie E. Blake Reed. He married Marie Fry on Jan. 16, 1919. She preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 1935. He married Genevieve Wright on June 7, 1938 at Independence. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Roy (Marcella) Nelson, Des Moines, Mrs. Dale (Arda) Hawk, Marion; Mrs. Donald (Shirley) King, Clarksville, Ark. and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Lester of Aurora; George of Fayette; Loren of Tripoli and Robert of Lamont; three sisters, Mrs. C.C. Lumberd, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Mrs. Norman (Altha) Streeter, Oelwein and Mrs. Alton (Juanita) Ferguson, Independence. He was in partnership in the grocery and clothing business with Harry Toole and Mayme Kleinsorge. Mr. Reed retired from farming near Lamont in 1937 and moved to Independence. He operated the Sinclar station on highway 150 from 1937 until 1951. He served on the board of supervisors form 1941 until 1951. In 1951 he became owner of the Reed Feed and Seed Store Independence, which he operated until February of 1962. Mr. Reed was a member of the First United Presbyterian church and the American Legion post. A memorial has been established for the First United Presbyterian church building fund and cards are available at the Hawe Funeral home.
