Frank and Edith owned and operated a grocery store in Crawford, Nebraska. From Loran Lewis: A county history, "Dawes County, the First Hundred Years," includes a family history of Frank Lewis. He states that the family moved to Crawford in 1885, going by train as far as Valentine, Nebraska and then by wagon, since Valentine was as far west as the railroad had been built. The family "fled" to Fort Robinson one time because of an Indian scare. The Curator said that there were many such scares up to 1890 and the massacre at Wounded Knee. Frank spent 45 years in the grocery business (1914-1959) which meant that everybody of that time period knew of him. LEWIS, FRANK C. and EDITH (BURKE), from Crawford Diamond Jubilee Book: Frank C. Lewis, born in 1878 migrated from New York State with his parents and came by immigrant car as far as Valentine, Nebraska, that being as far as the railroad came in 1885. He unloaded the car and hauled the goods and family to what is now Crawford, where he homesteaded four and one half miles north of Crawford. Their first summer was spent in a dugout. Fort Robinson was their post office at that time. Frank married Edith Burke (born Aug. 2, 1888) at Bridgeport, Nebraska, Sept. 5, 1907. He purchased a grocery business from Peter Rasmussen in 1914 and operated the store until he retired in 1959. Frank passed away in 1963 and is buried in the Crawford Cemetery. After Frank's death Edith continued living in the family home on Elm Street until September 2, 1980 when she moved to Ponderosa Villa where she still resides. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were active in civic and church affairs. Frank served two terms on the city council and also on the school board. He held the honor of being the first scout master of Crawford and they both served in many capacities at the Crawford Methodist Church where they were members. Frank was born in New York on August 25, 1878. Frank had two wives. The first wife was Ina May Unitt of Harrison. In approximately 1904, Frank, Ina, after they were married, and Loren, who was single, moved to California. While in California, Ina was found to be terminally ill. She wanted to come back to Nebraska to die. Frank and Ina moved back to Harrison about 1905, apparently leaving Loren in California. Inez later died of tuberculosis in Nebraska. Frank married Edith Burke of Harrison. Edith's father, serving as the minister in the Presbyterian Church, married the couple in Bridgeport, Morrill County, Nebraska on September 5, 1907. Frank and Edith owned and operated the F.L. Lewis Grocery in Crawford for 45 years. Frank died on February 9, 1963 in Crawford and is buried next to Edith at the Crawford Cemetery.
