"Old Frank Daniels," who for a quarter of a century has made the Judith Basin his home, died at his house out near the brewery last Tuesday and was buried in the Catholic cemetery Thursday afternoon. The passing of "Old Frank," as he was universally known, removes a figure which has become familiar to almost every man, woman and child in the city. Daniels was born in Canada 62 years ago. He early crossed the line into this country and took up the vocation of buffalo hunting on the great western plain, spending a number of his earlier years in what is now the state of North Dakota. He made his headquarters for about fifteen years around St. Joe, North Dakota, and became noted as one of the most daring and successful buffalo hunters of the day. Instead of entering the service of one of the numerous large companies who employed expert hunters to kill buffalo for their hides, Daniels ever remained an independent hunter and thousands of noble monarchs of the plains, now only known in song and story, met their deaths at the hands of Frank Daniels. Daniels was twice married while in St. Joe. From the first union were born two children, one of whom still lives. His first wife soon died and he married again. A large number of children were born from this union; three boys and two girls still living in this community. The buffalo being pushed toward the setting son by the relentless white man, Frank followed them and in 1881 came down into the valley of the Judith. The country was to his liking and he made this his home from that time until the day of his death. He once had a cabin in what is now Lewistown, but later moved up the creek and built a cabin which he has occupied almost since the memory of man runneth not to the contrary.
