He settled in Pennsylvania where he worked in the coal mines until 1883 when he came to Morton County on an immigrant train and was stationed at New Salem, North Dakota. Frank Toepke, second-generation, came to Morton County with his father when he was 12 years old. He took a Homestead 3 miles Southwest of Judson, North Dakota. He said, "I bet Uncle Sam $500 against a quarter section of land that I wouldn't starve to death until I proved up on the Homestead." He won his bet. In 1906, he purchased a half section of land Southeast of Judson where he made his home until he retired. In 1917, he purchased another half section of land on the Heart River and started raising cattle and established his brand, Diamond F. He married Alice Wildi who came to Morton County on the same immigrant train as the Toepkes. She came to the United States from Switzerland. There were seven children born to them, Viola, Mrs. Frank Fisher; Frank Jr.; Eva, Mrs. Christ Kleih; Margareite, Mrs. Steve Kaufmann; Archie, who has the present owns the home place; Grace, Mrs. Ernest Nickel; and Estelle, Mrs. Carl McHenry. Frank Toepke Jr., third generation, was born in 1899, at the Homestead Southwest of Judson. He worked on the farm until he was 20 years old then decided he wanted to see what the rest of the people were doing so he went harvesting at Pingree and Van Hook, North Dakota. There he bought a Model T truck and hauled grain for two years. In 1922 he went to Washington and worked on the Sound for four years as a fireman in a door factory. Then as he says, "I found out money was as hard to make one place is another," so he came back to Morton County and went farming and cattle raising on the farm he purchased South East of Judson, until they moved into Judson where he is now the custodian of the Judson School. He married Borgny Jacobson of Sims, North Dakota, on January 1, 1930. Their five children in this family, Jean, Mrs. Art Swanberg, Valley City; Virginia, Mrs. Ernest Oster, Hazen; Leonard, Judson; Leela, Mrs. Ed Fitterer, Dickinson; and Sandra, Mrs. Dave Wisdon, Mandan, North Dakota. Leonard Toepke, fourth-generation, was born at Judson in 1940 and lives on the home place, previously having worked as a Carpenter and operator for Anderson, Guthrie and Carlson, Bismarck, and as truck driver for Loehrke Brothers Construction, Judson. He married Judy Kuhn of New Salem. They have two children James and Kathy Jo. James Toepke, fifth generation, was born in Mandan, is 10 years old and is a fourth grader in the Judson school.
