Aged 38 years, 11 months, 12 days. ~~~~~~~ Frank Freeman Killed. Frank Freeman, who with his family left this county several years ago for Oklahoma, was last Saturday morning shot by a neighboring farmer, and he died on Sunday morning. The details of the sad affair are unknown here, but it is understood that Frank purchased some corn from a man who rented land from the farmer who did the shooting. The renter it seems owed the farmer a board bill and the farmer objected to having the corn taken away until the board bill was paid, and so notified Mr. Freeman, who claimed the board bill was none of his affair, and as he had purchased the corn he proposed to take it away. It ia also stated that bad blood existed between Mr. Freeman and the farmer, they having trouble last summer. While Mr. Freeman waa gathering a load ot corn the farmer shot at him five times with either a revolver or Winchester, three shots taking effect, one in left ahoulder, one in left jaw and one above left nipple. A telegram was received here about noon on Saturday telling of the shooting, and several others came during the evening, and on Sunday morning another one came stating that Frank could likely live until his mother reached him, so on Sunday afternoon his motner and his two brothers Jim and Tom Freeman left for Woodward, arriving there Monday night, but too late to see Frank alive. The body will start back here today, arriving to-morrow evening. No arrangements for the funeral and burial have as yet been made, and none will likely be made until instructions are received from the funeral party. Frank leaves a wife and six children. The killing of Frank Freeman in Oklahoma, from the particulars gathered in the case, was a cold-blooded murder. Some two years ago Frank Freeman and family went to Oklahoma and took up a claim of 160 acres. Last spring he sold his claim and purchased another 8 miles south of Woodward. Adjoining his farm was a man named John Bond, who had lived there with his wife several years, and had a bad reputation among his neighbors. Mr. Bond had rented some ground to a tenant, half the crop to be taken for the use of the ground. The tenant sold his half of the crop to Mr. Freeman. Prior to this however Mr. Freeman and Mr. Bond had some trouble. Bond drawing a gun on Freeman. For this freeman had Bond arrested, but when the day for trial came he thought it best not to prosecute, and the case was dismissed. The dismissal however was against the advice of the prosecuting attorney, who said if Bond was let alone he would kill somebody. However matters went along quietly between the two men until a few weeks ago when Mr. Freeman purchased the corn from Mr. Bond's tenant. It seems that the tenant owed Bond for board and when Freeman went to gather his corn Bond objected to the removal of the crop until the board bill was settled. Mr. Freeman stated that the board bill was none of his affair, that he had bought the corn and proposed to take it away. This conversation took place when Freeman hauled away the first load on the 2nd day of this month. On the morning of Sept. 6th Mr. Freeman and his 12-year-old son Carl went after another load. While they were gathering the corn Mr. Bond and wife went to them, the wife being in front, the woman doing all the talking. She asked Mr. Freeman what he was doing there, and if they had not told him not to come back anymore? Frank replied that he came after his corn that he had bought, and proposed to have it. The woman said somethng more, and then stepping aside told her husband, who was some 8 or 10 feet behind her, to shoot. He fired his revolver five times in quick succession, one ball taking effect in the left jaw, another in the left breast. (either of which, according to the attending physicians, were fatal) and another cutting off the end of the left thumb. According to the testimony at the inquest Frank made no effort to defend himself. After being shot he climbed into the wagon but immediately fainted, but shortly regained consciousness and remained rational until death. A man by the name of Scates, working near by, heard the shooting and reached the wagon just after Mr. Freeman climbed in. This was about 8 a. m. Bond and wife walked back to the house where he was later arrested and is now in jail. Immediately after the shooting Frank was taken home and his relatives here notified. The first telegram announced that he was shot and killed, so his folks here telegraphed back to have the body embalmed and shipped here. Later another telegram came announcing that Frank wanted to see his mother and for her to come at once, so on Sunday afternoon she, in company with her two sons James and Tom, left for Woodward, arriving there at 6 p. m. Monday. In the meantime Frank had died at 7:15 p. m. Sunday. He thought his mother could reach him by 7 p. m that day and when she did not come he said he could not wait for her and died in a few minutes. Frank had some sort of a message for his brother Jim, and realizing that he could not live to see Jim he attempted to write it down for him, but was too nervous, and in his last moments was unable to speak the message so that it could be understood, and no one knows what he wanted to say. On Monday the body was taken to Woodward and embalmed. On Tuesday at 2 p. m. memorial services, which were largely attended, were held in one of the churches in Woodward, conducted by the Odd Fellows. On Wednesday at 1 :45 a. m. the funeral party started home, arriving here at 4 p. m. Thursday. On last Friday at 2 p. m. funeral services were held at the Christian church, conducted by Rev. J. H. Wood, and attended by a large audience. The burial was in charge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. As stated in our last issue the deceased leaves a wife and six children. She is a sister of Dave and Henry Stuart of Leonard, and besides other relatives in this county. John Bond, the man who did the shooting, formerly lived at Brookfield. Mo., and married a Miss Owen, who lived at Novelty, Mo., and will be re remembered by many living in that locality. Our sympathies go out to the wife and children of the deceased, as well as the mother who lives in this city. The tragedy is full of sadness. Perhaps never before in the annals of the history of Woodward county has the county jail held three as desperate criminals as she to-day contains. On last Saturday morning the news came to town from Indian creek about 6 miles southeast that a party by the name of John Bond had shot Frank Freeman, on inquiry it is learned that the difficulty arose over sone kaffir corn. It appears that a party by the name of Churchill had rented some ground of Bond which he put in Kaffir corn, afterward selling his share of the feed to Mr. Freeman, who went to gather some, but was approached by Bond and his wife, who it appears warned him not to cut the corn, and after a few words, perhaps mostly from the woman, as she is quoted as saying, "now is the time to shoot" addressing her husband, who immediately fired with a 38 calibre revolver, one shot taking effect in the left cheek, and one in the left breast. Mr. Freeman lingered until about 7:30 p.m., the following day, Sunday, when he passed away. He leaves a wife and several children. He was a brother to deputy sheriff Freeman, and a member of the I.O.O.F., who paid their due respects to him after which his remains were shipped to Shelbyville, Mo., his old home for burial. The corn still waves in the field, one soul has gone to the beyonds, the woman is yet free, the murderer rests quietly in the basement of the $11,000 palace, and the world moves on.
