Clears Mystery of Rhoades’ Shooting INJURED MAN DIED LAST NIGHT Stray Bullet from 44-Caliber Rifle Penetrated His Body – He Was Picking Corn in a Field West of Fremont. While picking sweet corn in the acre triangular field belonging to Carl Engberg immediately west of Pierce’s grove just west of Fremont city limits, Frank Rhoades received a bullet from a 44-caliber gun in the center of his breast less than two inches above the heart line. The ball passed through his left lung and out under his left arm, making an unusually ugly wound which caused his death at 1:54 o’clock last night. The shooting occurred between 2 and 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Rhoades, who is in the employ of Mr. Engberg, left the latter’s house and went to the cornfield for the purpose of gathering a supply of the green ears with which to stock a vegetable wagon when it would be started on the regular trip about the city today. Ordinarily, the work does not require more than three-quarters of an hour and when a period of twice this length had elapsed Mr. Engberg became apprehensive and went to the field. He found Mr. Rhoades lying prone on the ground in a small cleared spot near the center of the enclosure. The wounded man had not lost consciousness and was calling for water. Responding to a question as to what was the trouble he said weakly: “O, I have been shot. Get some water quick.” Mr. Engberg questioned him as to what had occurred, and Mr. Rhoades replied: “I don’t know. Someone shot me from the west about an hour ago. I could hardly move since.” He put his hand up to show where the bullet had entered, and Mr. Engberg hurried away to get relief. He telephoned for a physician and then returned to the field and did what he could to relieve the suffering of the injured man until Dr. Harlam arrived in his carriage and assisted in conveying him to the Engberg home, which is just across the road north, on West Military avenue, little more than a hundred yards from where Mr. Rhoades was lying when found. Was It a Stray Bullet? Residents of this vicinity believe that it was a stray bullet that struck Mr. Rhoades. They say that the report of discharged firearms is a common occurrence in this vicinity, and little attention is given them. Boys and men alike hunt birds and chickens and occasionally shoot at targets near the grove, and along the railroad track which passes west of it. If the shot which struck him came from the west, Mr. Rhoades must have been facing south or southwest. He was reclining on his left side, his head towards the south, when help reached him, but it is not improbable that he changed his position several times during the seemingly long time he waited. One of the points which tend to indicate that the shooting might not have been accidental lies in the fact that the gun used was of so large a caliber. It seems improbable that anyone would go bird shooting armed with a 44-rifle. Constable Henry Watson and August Engberg made a careful examination of the ground shortly before 6 o’clock last evening. They could find no tracks save those of Mr. Rhoades in the field. West and southwest of the field and railroad track are the slaughter houses, and a considerable area of territory adjacent to the river which is frequented by hunters. Those who claim to know, however, say that it would have been hardly possible for a bullet from a point of greater distance than the railroad to have penetrated Mr. Rhoades’ body as it did. The cornstalks in the field are shoulder high, and of flourishing growth. Passing through it, a man’s head would stand out an excellent target for a marksman on the railroad bed elevation. Mr. Engberg Tells of It. Mr. Engberg and his son, August, both of whom are highly esteemed residents of their neighborhood, look upon the affair in no other light than that it was accidental. Said the former to The Tribune’s representative: “There has been so much shooting in our neighborhood that I was always afraid something would happen. Mr. Rhoades worked for me three or four years, and was a fine man in every way. He had much sickness and trouble. He is given to fainting spells caused by stomach trouble, and I always was uneasy about him when he worked in the hot sun. I thought of sunstroke or a fainting spell as soon as it came to my mind that he was long time in the field, and when I found him lying there, my first conclusion was that he had fainted.” Mr. Rhoades had lived in Fremont for a number of years, and was highly spoken of by everyone with whom he had associations. He had driven Mr. Engberg’s vegetable wagon on Fremont streets for at least three summers, and in this way made quite a large acquaintance, especially among housewives and children. His home is at the corner of Jensen and M streets. He leaves a wife and one child, the latter a little son of four years. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades, an aged couple, have rooms at the Central hotel. Boy Makes Confession. Arthur Canaga, a 15-year-old boy who has been in the employ of Vasholtz, the butcher appeared at the county jail shortly before 2 o’clock this afternoon and voluntarily told a story which unquestionably solves the mystery surrounding the shooting. He and another lad named Ed Herre, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herre, he said, drove out to the packing house yesterday afternoon and on the Military road west of Fremont fired a shot from a 44-caliber revolver at a sign attached on a telephone pole. The gun was in Canaga’s hands, and Herre held the horse. Sheriff Bauman heard Canaga’s story and then drove with him to the spot indicated. It was ascertained that the point where the wagon stood was in a direct line with the telephone pole and the center of the corn field where Mr. Rhoades worked, a total distance of about 100 yards. The sign was one which read “Smoke Onion Made Cigars,” and it had not been penetrated by the bullet. Without doubt, the ball went past the pole and struck the man in the field who was almost if not wholly concealed by the cornstalks around him. Canaga is a bright appearing boy who evidently works hard for a living. A Tribune reporter was present while he was talking to the sheriff. He told a perfectly straight story, saying that he was exceedingly sorry the accident happened, and that he thought since it was evident he was to blame that it was no more than right that he should give himself up. Sheriff Bauman was working on the case this forenoon and had ascertained that Canaga and Herre were in the vicinity with a gun. He sent word for them to come to his office, but Canaga responded before the sheriff’s message reached him. In his own words, the boy said: “We were gong to the slaughter house to butcher. I always take the big gun along so we can kill the hogs or cattle with it in case they don’t die when we dispose of them in the usual way. I saw the sign and said I would try to hit it. We could not see any body in the field or nearby, so I fired. I do not know that I hit Mr. Rhoades, but it seems that I must have. I did not know him, but I do know his sister. We drove on out to the slaughter house, and returned home in the evening.” Canaga’s parents live on East First street. Sheriff Bauman will hold an inquest over Mr. Rhoades body at 7 o’clock this evening at Bader Bros. undertaking rooms. Dr. W. J. Davies, who attended him, said on the stand that upon a second and thorough examination of the wound in Rhoades’ body he had come to the conclusion that the bullet penetrated from the rear and under the left arm, passed through the left lung and came out in the center of the breast. From this, the conclusion must be reached that Rhoades was facing southeast, which is opposite of the first theory. The following witnesses have testimony: C. A. Engberg, Mrs. Engberg, Mr. Scott, Ivar Johnson, Deputy Sheriff Jensen, Edward Herre and Arthur Canaga. The jury found that Rhoades death resulted from a gunshot wound discharged from a 44-caliber rifle in the hands of Arthur Canaga, and that Canaga shot at a mark and had no intention of hitting Rhoades.
