Feb 22, 1932 - Carroll Daily herald - The community was shocked yesterday when, word spread through the town and country side that Frank Reinhart, popular and well known young farmer living a mile east and two miles north of Mt. Carmel, had taken his own life by shooting himself with a rifle early Saturday evening. It was believed that he was temporarily mentally unbalanced. Although his health had not been exceptionally good, he had not been seriously ill. He had no financial worries, it was said. It was understood that before he shot himself he had written a two page note which was found on his body. This note was said to be of a rambling nature, indicating an unbalanced state of mind. Its contents were not made public by relatives. Mr. Reinhart had brought his family to town Saturday afternoon, and, so far as is known, the last place he visited was the office of County Agent F.J. Kloser where he talked with Miss Ann Maystadt, office assistant there, about a Farm Bureau program which Mr. Reinhart was arranging for next Wednesday evening at Mt. Carmel. He left there during the afternoon, evidently going to his home. His wife and the children were at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Hess, Mrs. Reinhart's parents, where they were awaiting Mr. Reinharts return. Mr. Kloser, returning to his office and desiring to talk to Mr. Reinhart, called Carl Hess, a brother-in-law of Mr. Reinhart and asked him if he had seen him. A phone call was made to Albert Reinhart, a brother, who lives just across the road from the Frank Reinhart place. The brother said that Frank's car was at home and that he would investigate. Sons of Albert Reinhart went to their uncle's home but could not find him. Mr. Hess and Martin Reinhart, father of Frank, immediately went to the farm and with Albert Reinhart made a more intensive search. They noticed that a dog kept going back to the barn and they concluded that if he was anywhere about, he must be in the barn. In an unused room, containing machinery and some baled hay, they finally found him, dead. He had shot himself in the head with the rifle. Dr. Smith, county coroner, was notified at Manning. The note having been found, indicating suicide, the coroner decided no inquest was necessary. The body was brought to the Kircher Funeral Home here and then taken to the home of J.P. Hess. Frank Reinhart was born Oct. 5, 1898 in Kniest township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Reinhart. He had been a resident of the county all his life. He was married to Lillian Hess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Hess, Aug. 26, 1923 at Carroll. They have, four children, Maxine, Yvonne, John and Marilyn. Brothers and sisters are: Albert, George, Mrs. L.J. Wiedemeier, and Mrs. Sanders, the latter of Spirit Lake. His parents also survive him. Mr. Reinhart was educated in the Mt. Carmel schools and spent two years at Creighton university and a year at Boyle's business college at Omaha. He was a member of St Mary's church, Mt. Carmel, and of the Knights of Columbus. The funeral will be held here at Ss. Peter and Paul's church. Tuesday morning at 9:30. The Rev. Father Lambert Schenkelberg will conduct the services. Burial will be in the family lot in Ss. Peter and Paul's cemetery. Mr. Reinhart was a leader in farming circles in his community and prominent in Farm Bureau activities. Several years ago, he, with J.J. Feldman and John Baumhover as teammates, went to the state finals in the statewide Farm Bureau debates. He was enthusiastic about farm work and was the inspiration of many Farm Bureau activities in his township and the county.
