The ninth of eleven children, Frank was born on the family homestead in Lake Andes, SD to Fred and Eliza (Glendy) Branaugh on April 15, 1921. The family moved to Willow Springs, MO for one year during his childhood before settling in Yankton in 1927. He was proud to be part of this community and remained here his entire life. He never missed the opportunity to share with others about his outstanding 8th grade education from Grove School. He read every book in the school's library, and his hunger for learning never ceased. As a young boy he worked many hours at the Anderson Stockyards and also on the Anderson family farm. In 1939 he entered the military and served in the Third Infantry Division, 41st Field Artillery until he was honorably discharged in 1946. During World War II he served in several campaigns including Northern Africa, Sicily, Southern France, Anzio, Rhineland, Rome/Arno, Naples-Foggia, and Germany. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, an Oak Leaf Cluster, several American citations, and two French citations. After returning from the service he was employed by Gambles, Montgomery Wards, and was an auctioneer. His entrepreneur legacy began in 1949 when he built the first self-service gas station in Yankton. Underground, Inc. was born in 1953 and he was an independent contractor until he retired in 1967. During his retirement he continued to be active in the community by developing area businesses and supporting local athletics. He was very involved with the Disabled American Veterans and was instrumental in starting the Yankton Hevle-Heimes Chapter serving as its first Commander. He was a lobbyist for the DAV, and he received numerous Distinguished Service Awards for his tireless efforts working with veterans. He was active at the national level and from1980-82 he was the National Executive Committeeman. He researched the information of those from Yankton County who lost their lives in WW II and donated a Memorial Plaque in memory of them that is now displayed on the monument in Memorial Park. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He married Mildred Frank at the Methodist church on February 21, 1947 in Vermillion, SD. They had four children. Frank began attending Calvary Baptist Church in 1975. He will be remembered for his generous spirit of always giving to others. He drove baseball team players to dozens of out of town games while his son played on the Teeners, which took them all the way to Hershey, PA. He always helped out the little guy and gave to the underprivileged. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and related many tales about his excursions. His later years were spent enjoying coffee with his many friends at Hy-Vee. He was a member of the Minnesota Twins Golden Sluggers Club and never missed a game on WNAX. The joy of his life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were all fascinated with his stories and idolized their grandpa. He never met a child he didn't like, and one never left his presence without a dollar in his pocket. His sense of pride, humor and love were his greatest gifts to all who knew him. Frank may have been seen by the world as handicapped having only one arm, being legally blind and partially deaf, and facing diabetes and heart problems, but those in his life knew he never once said "I can't" or complain about the hand he was dealt. Through his example, his loved ones and friends learned endurance and perseverance, trust, and generosity. They learned to give without expectations, laugh at themselves and appreciate without judgment. These life lessons are truly gifts and will forever be his legacy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of 61 years, Mildred, children: Ronny Cromwell, Cave Creek, AZ; Tim (Joan) Branaugh, Becky (Seth) Swanstrom, and Erin (David) Schuster, all of Yankton; ten grandchildren; Chad (Kelli) Cromwell, Callie (Chad) Bonine, both of Cave Creek, AZ; Toni (Erich) Bretthauer and Tim (Mary) Branaugh, both of Las Vegas, NV; Mark (Jackie) Swanstrom, Sioux Falls; Chris (Lindsey) Swanstrom, Yankton; Ryan (Emily) Swanstrom, Sioux Falls; Jacob (Julie) Swanstrom, West Lafayette, IN; Andrew Schuster, Sioux Falls, and Meghan Schuster, Yankton; 7 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mary Bechtoldt of CA, and his beloved dog, Lassie. He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward, Earl, John, Benjamin, Ellis, Alfred, and Leo, and two sisters, Pearl Sparks and Eunice Schuldt, and his parents.
