Frank Liebel, 39, father of the four dead children, succumbing in a Minot hospital. The child victims of the fire were Florence 12, Margie 9, Leonard 7, and Delores 6. After having been roused from their beds in an upstairs room, the children had reached the ground floor and were only a few feet from the outside kitchen door when the floor collapsed beneath them. The fire started in the kitchen and evidently had spread rapidly under the flooring. The mother, who had roused the children, and who herself had reached the door with Jean, aged three, in her arms, stood helpless outside as she heard the screams of the four older children, as they fell to their death amid the burning debris in the cellar. After having suffered painful injuries in an attempt to fight the flames, Liebel rushed upstairs and rescued Josephine. forcing open a window with the four year old in his arms, the father fell to the ground outside the house. After his escape with the child, finding his wife and young son safe, Liebel got into his automobile with the remaining members of the family and drove them to the home of a neighbor, Jacob Moll, one quarter of a mile away. The escaping members of the family were clad only in their sleeping garments as they sought the shelter of the neighboring home. Liebel's clothing were burned to rags. His bare feet and his hands were bleeding as he drove to the Moll home. Medical aid for the injured man and child was summoned from Garrison and Raub residents, including a brother of Liebel, George, who operates a restaurant in the village, were informed of the fire by telephone shortly after midnight. Retaining consiousness in spite of his painful injuries, Liebel told the story of his experience in the fire to his brother George after the latter reached the Moll home. A few hours later, accompanied by George and by a physician from Garrison, Liebel was entered at the hospital in Minot. The fire was burning about the kitchen stove when Liebel was awakened by smoke, he told his brother. Rousing other members of the family, Liebel turned his efforts toward combatting the flames, which did not appear to him to have reached dangerous proportions. At the moment the children, all except Josephine, came downstairs, Liebel suddenly realized that the house was being consumed, and he dashed for the stairway door to save her. As he started up the stairs, the flames seemed to follow hot upon him, he said. Meanwhile he was not fully aware of the tragedy of the fallen floor, which the mother witnessed in its tragic horror. Charred remmants of the bodies of the four children were recovered Friday. Dr. Ernest Larson of Underwood, McLean county coroner, directed the recovery while the ruins of the home still smouldered. Funeral services for the five members of the family were held at the Catholic church in Underwood at 11 a.m. Saturday, in charge of Father Paulson of Elbowoods. Burial was made at the Underwood cemetery. Coroner Larson said no inquest into the fire deaths was necessary. Survivors, in addition to the widow and two children, include Mr. Liebel's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Liebel of Underwood, and the following brothers and sisters: Walter of Carpio, Charles of Foxholm, Ernest of Underwood, George of Raub, Rose Liebel, Mrs. Alvin Sailor, and Mrs. William Schwandt of Underwood. *********************** From the McLean County Independent - July 23, 1931
