Schmidt was born on his parents' farm in Hamlin Township, Audubon County, and died at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa. He was the son of Jorgen Fedder and Sarah (Sadie) Frances Mantz Schmidt. His siblings were Marie--Mrs. Ervin Wendt, San Diego, CA, and Helen Schmidt--Mrs. Russell Tessman, Audubon, IA. Frank was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. He attended rural schools in Audubon County, then operated the family farm. Frank married 15 October 1941 to Dorothy I. Oakley in Maryville, MO. They were the parents of two daughters and three sons: Maxine and Janice; Ervin, Lloyd, and Bill. They farmed in Hamlin Township and Frank also operated a repair shop for many years in addition to farming. In the 1950's, Frank began driving truck part time from Burgher's Trucking and continued this until he retired in the late 1980's. Frank served on the Board of Supervisors for two four year terms. Dorothy died 19 May 1993. Frank stayed on the farm until becoming a resident of the Friendship Home in Audubon in November 1996.
