Read More	Frank May, pioneer Hawarden resident and early day business man here, passed away early last Friday morning at the John Brabander home in LeMars, where he and Mrs. May had lived for the past four or five months. Mr. May had been in declining health for the past few years and last spring, while still residing at Kingsley, suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. Several months ago Mr. and Mrs. May moved to LeMars in order that he might receive better care and treatment and be near her niece, Mrs. Charles Down. Funeral services were held at the Mauer Funeral Home at LeMars Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Proctor of Kingsley and Rev. Paul Viebe of LeMars officiating. The remains were then brought to Hawarden and interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Frank May was born at Delavan, Ill., May 2, 1862 so was nearly 77 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Calliope as a youg man in the early 80's and was employed for a few years in a lumber yard then operated by his uncle, J.T. Van Orman. Later he was employed in a meat market in Hawarden operated by C.M. Fleshman. In 1889 he formed a partnership in the meat business with Walter Scott in Hawarden and this partnership continued for about six years when Mr. Scott purchased his interest. Subsequently Mr. May went to Sanborn, Iowa, where he operated a meat market for a number of years. Later he lived in Sioux City for a time but in 1911 went to Kingsley where he operated a meat market for many years and also for a time held a tank wagon agency for an oil company. Ill health forced his retirement from active business a few years ago. Mr. may was united in marriage here with Miss Effie Swearingen on October 7, 1891 and she survives him. No children were born to them, but a niece, now Mrs. Charles Down of LeMars, made her home with them during part of her girlhood. Mr. May was a fine type of citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all the older Hawarden residents who knew him during his young manhood. He was a stellar baseball player in his youth and was a member of the famous Calliope ball club of the middle 80's which established a far-reaching reputation. He performed both in the pitcher's box and as first baseman on that team. He was known as a man of the strictest honor and integrity and had the capacity for making and holding firm friends. He was a brother of Mrs. J.C. Miller of Hawarden, who passed away in 1922, and Mrs. Thos. G. Betts, also an early day Hawarden resident, who died a few years ago at Santa Monica, Calif. Besides his wife he is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, Mrs. Charles Down of LeMars; Mrs. Frank Richter and Ted Miller of Hawarden; John Miller of Tyndall, S.D.; Frank Miller of Cedar Rapids, and Warren and Wm.
