Westerfield, 56, Chelan business man who was "helping out" in the apple harvest, was fatally injured Thursday afternoon when he was crushed by a tractor and trailer loaded with boxed apples. According to reports, Jim Phelps, who was hauling in apples from the orchard of Art Campbell's ranch here where Westerfield was picking, had stopped the tractor and trailer load of apples on the hillside near the truck. He has sent the brake, shut off the switch and had put the tractor in gear. It is believed as he backed up the truck he brushed the tractor, loosing the brakes on the tractor, which started the vehicle and apple-loaded trailer down the hill towards Westerfield. Those who saw the accident said that Westerfield saw the tractor coming, but did not move. The tractor ran over the picker and came to a stop nearby against a tree, leaving the loaded trailer on Westerfield, who suffered a crushed chest, abdomen and a fractured leg. The trailer had to be jacked up before Westerfield could be released. He died two hours later in the Chelan Community Hospital. Funeral services for Frank M. Westerfield were held from the Smith Funeral Home chapel Monday afternoon at two o'clock, with the Rev. Hubert C. Vincent, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Mrs. Roy Pickett St. and Mrs. Floyd McDonald sang "in the Garden," with Mrs. Lester Morse accompanying. Acting casket bearers included Eugene Gouette, Chester Green, Melvin Davis, William Price, Victor Hallock and Jim Carroll, Honorary pallbearers were R. H. Hamilton, George Venable, Glen Faris, Frank O. Renn, Herbert Ogden and Eugene Watson. Interment was in the Riverview cemetery with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Frank M. Westerfield was born January 10, 1892, at Willmett, Ill, where he spent his early life, coming west to the Chelan area when he was 21 years of age. Since that time he has lived in Chelan except for five years in the Methow valley. In 1920 he was married to Belle Hinton. For the past 20 years he has conducted the Westerfield Gardens, which have become known throughout the northwest. On Thursday afternoon he was injured when a tractor and truck hit him while he was picking apples, "helping out" during the need for pickers. He died two hours later in the community hospital. Survivors include his wife, Belle; one sister, Hazel Haslam; one brother, Haslam Westerfield, Seattle; two nephews, Dr. Richard Westerfield of Oakland, Calif. and Robert Westerfield in England. Relatives coming from out of town for the funeral services included: Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Goeke of Oakland, Calif.; Dr. and Mrs. Richard Westerfield, Oakland Calif., Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Hinton, Mr. and Mrs. Will A. Hinton, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Hinton and Mrs. Fanny Rogers, all of Oroville; Mrs. Lois Rubert and Robert Hinton, Tonasket; Mrs. Helen Hendricks, Portland, Ore. and Jerry Hinton, Pullman.
