Survivors include his devoted wife, Jessie and two daughters, Violet, Mrs. M. J. Hornseth of Los Angeles, Calif., and Florence, Mrs. F. V. Maytum of Spirit Lake. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild also mourn his passing. Services were held Wednesday afternoon, December 30, at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church with the Rev. Trevor Baskerville in charge. *The Spirit Lake Beacon, Dec. 31, 1964 ------------ The following obituary was submitted by: Shirley (Huseby) Hemingway, July 27, 2011, and is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon, Frank Nelson Roth Frank Nelson Roth was born Aug. 29, 1878 in a log cabin family home located 3 1/4 miles south and a mile east of George, Iowa. He was the youngest and last surviving member of the family of seven children born to Anna Barbary Lilli and Joseph Anton Roth. His mother had come in a sailing vessel from Bavaria to Baltimore, Md., where she observed her thirteenth birthday that October. A cousin, John Deere, of the John Deere Implement Co., failed to meet her as previously arranged so she continued on her own. Near Waukegan, Ill., she met and in 1858 married Joseph Anton Roth. He was one of nine children of the then prominent family in Wangen, Wertenburg, Germany. He had studied extensively, spoke seven languages and was completing his preparations for the Divinity when he left abruptly and as a "stowaway" paid for his passage to the United States by working in the ship's galley. A few years after their marriage, the family was living near Evanston and their bakery was destroyed in the great Chicago Fire of 1871. He had served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865, being wounded both at Chickamauga and during Sherman's march to the sea…the latter wound causing his demise. A month after the Chicago fire, they moved to Iowa, taking up the Bounty Land grant of 160 acres in what is now Section 20 of Dale Township in Lyon County. He built the home for his wife and four children of cottonwood logs cut along the Big Rock River nine miles west. Lemars was the nearest settlement and one, or possibly two, other families were their only neighbors. Mr. Frank Roth was born on the last day of the 7-year grasshopper plague that even that day had darkened the sun. He grew to manhood in the George rural area, attending country school. His father passed away when he was 12 years of age. The original log cabin had been enlarged and covered with siding before 1900 when he married Jessie Belle Cove. Two daughters, Violet and Florence, were born to the couple there. The first eight or nine years were spent in farming and raising blooded stock Percheron horses and Aberdeen Angus cattle…an innovation at that time. Due to serious illness, he left farming and opened a garage in George, dealing in Buick and Cadillac cars and later in Chevrolets when they were added to the General Motors line. In 1919, he enlarged his business venture in Rock Rapids, adding GMC trucks and a line of farm tractors. Following a gradual economic decline, two of the three Rock Rapids banks were closed resulting in the loss of farms, business and a summer cottage in Arnolds Park. He loved the lakes area and the frequent visits with Abbie Gardner Sharp over the back fence. He used a Saxson motor and later a Buick K-49 in a Hafer launch…one of the first conversion units tried on the Iowa Great Lakes. The family moved to Spirit Lake Sept. 13, 1923 where he had purchased the Hiser Cottages. He was later employed at Consumers Lumber by Oscar Lindquist and served some 13 years as street commissioner for the city of Spirit Lake. He gradually purchased adjacent lots and rural acres and developed an outstanding Jersey and Guernsey herd…thus returning to general farming on a limited scale from which he never retired. He rode the tractor, making hay, even his last summer of 1964. He was a man of slight stature and build, yet he had great endurance. He made a remarkable recovery from surgery in February of this year. During the summer months he started a gradual decline, being confined to his bed only three days before his death on Dec. 28, 1964. He had lived his life as a staunch Christian. He was always interested in humankind and was willing and ready to assist in any way open to him. He loved the out-of-doors and while serving as Deputy Federal Game Warden was influential in the early stocking of pheasants in northwest Iowa. He and Mrs. Roth were members of the Rock Rapids Gun Club and went on frequent hunting trips. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and Farm Bureau and took an active interest in community affairs. Many out-of-town friends and relatives were among those who attended the final rites in the Spirit Lake Methodist church Dec. 30, 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers and sisters; Mrs. Henry (Anna) Welkert, Frazee, Minn.; George W., Worthington, Minn.; Mary Theresa Roth, who died in infancy; Mrs. William (Sarah) Schmidt, George; Joseph A., George; and John A., George. He is survived by: his wife, Jessie Cove Roth; two daughters, Mrs. F.V. (Florence) Maytum, Spirit Lake, and Mrs. M.J. (Violet) Hornseth, Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandsons, John Roth Maytum of Spirit Lake and James Nelson Maytum of Peoria, Ill.; a granddaughter, Frances Ann Maytum of Drury College, Springfield, Mo.; and one grandson, David Maytum of Peoria, Ill. -------------
