Frank and his cousin, a son of Owen Berney of Albion, started home in a roadster and when nearing the mill bridge south of town, the car they were driving skidded in the mud as they approached a car driven by Bud Rasch of Greeley and, turning almost around, struck the Rasch car and then rolled over in the road. Mr. Berney was the only one seriously hurt, and he suffered from a bad blow on the head which rendered him unconscious. Medical aid was summoned and he was removed to the hotel where he remained in an unconscious condition until his death Sunday evening. The accident appeared to be unavoidable, as the muddy condition of the rods made it almost impossible to control the Berney car when it started skidding in the road. The Rasch car was considerably damaged and the other car was a wreck. Frank Berney, who was 47 years old, was a world war veteran, enlisting as a volunteer with the Spalding boys that left here at the beginning of the war and going with them to France along towards the close of the war. For the past few years he had been living on a farm south of Leo Valley. He was married twenty years ago, but the family separated shortly afterwards and he leaves a wife and child, besides numerous other relatives in this vicinity. His brothers are John, Bartlett; Tom and Owen of Albion; Will and James of Spalding; a sister in Wyoming, and another sister, Mrs. Judge, of Greeley. The funeral ws held from St. Michael's church in Spalding Tuesday morning.
