Read More	Springfield Republican 13 Aug. 1882 Probable Murder at Athol The dead body of Frank Perry, an unmarried man, aged about 27 was found lying near the track at the school-street railroad crossing in Athol about 5 a.m. yesterday with a ghastly wedge-shaped hole in the top of his head, from which the brains had nearly all oozed out. This indicated that he had met his death from a blow of an axe, and a few feet distant a broken axe-handle, with the blade missing was found and takin in charge by Sheriff Lord. Near where the axe handle was found was a great pool of blood. One of the victims arms had been crushed as if run over by a train. Circumstances are thought to point clearly to murder, and it is believed the body was dragged to the track to give the appearance of an accidental death from the cars. Perry was seen the night before in company with one Walter Rickey, an employee of the water-works, both being intoxicated and quarreling. Officer Grey at once went in search of Rickey at the water-works and he was taken into custody. He claims that he left Perry the night before on one of the streets, and denies all knowledge of his death. Perry moved to Athol not long ago from North Brookfield where his parents live, and he worked in Kendall's boot factory _______________________________________________ Boston Herald 15 Aug. 1882 The doctors who examined the body of Frank Perry of Athol are of the opinion that his death was the result of a railroad accident. An inquest will be held next Friday. _______________________________________________ Worcester Daily Spy 19 Aug. 1882 The Athol Case The inquest in the Perry case was held Friday, before Trial Judge Justice E.T. Lewis. J.H. Crowther, engineer of a freight train which passed through Athol about 12:35 Friday night for the west, testified that he neither heard nor saw anything unusual that night when going through the town, but on his arrival at North Adams that morning, he discovered blood on the left side of the pilot of his engine. Bartlett Fay, track walker of the Fitchburg Railroad, testified to finding the body of a man on the track near the School St. crossing that morning shortly before 5 o'clock. Other witnesses testified to having seen the body and of assisting in removing it from the track. Several noticed indications of the body having been dragged along over the track about thirty-five feet to the place where it was found. Warren Reckey testified to having been with Perry Friday evening, and of leaving him on Main St. near the crossing about 10 o'clock in an intoxicated condition. Medical examiner Lynde stated that he was called Saturday to view the body of Frank Perry, and of the condition in which he found it. He gave his theory of the affair, and it was his opinion that there were no facts or evidence thus far discovered in this case on which to support a theory of murder. Dr. James Oliver and Dr. M.L. Lyndsey both substantially agreed with the theory of Dr. Lynde, and all three testified that the wound on the head could not have been made with an axe or any similar instrument. There are, however, some who still cling to the theory of foul play. __________________________________________
