Zacher, age 76 of Elgin, will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, December 28, 2009 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor John Amundson, officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery with full military honors afforded by the George W. Snook American Legion Post #246 in Elgin. Franklin Raymond Zacher was born in Elgin, ND on November 11,1933, the son of Christian John and Ottilia ( Zeller) Zacher. He completed grade school and two years of high school in Elgin. He was drafted into the U S Army on October 15, 1953 and went through basic training at Fort Riley, KS. He was stationed at Fort Eutis,VA for a time and also spent 6 months in Greenland. He was discharged from the U.S. Army on October 14, 1955, remaining on standby for 6 years. Frank was a heavy equipment operator working on road construction, and also built stock dams and waterways for local farmers and ranchers in Grant County. He gave his time & used his equipment to do the grading work for the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church when it was built in Elgin in 1980. He moved to Hazen, ND in 1981 making his home with his brother, John, until September 1998, when he returned to Elgin to reside in the Senior Apts. In May 2003, Frank moved to the Good Samaritan Home in Mott, ND where he passed away on December 19, 2009. He is survived by a brother, Reinhold of Elgin, ND; two sisters, Sue Zeller, Billings,MT Ardella (Maynard Krause) Wadena, MN, sister-in-law Arlene Zacher, Parshall, ND, brother- in - law Russell Zavalney, Velva, ND and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters- Ruth Cantrell, Elaine Zavalney; and two brothers- Herbert & John, and brothers in law, Ray Cantrell and Lester Zeller. Visitation will be on Monday from 9:00 to 10:00 am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin.
