Read More	Frank Richard Gruhn 1924 - 2016 Frank Gruhn passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Sherman Oaks, California on May 31, 2016. He was born in Eureka, California on June 23, 1924 to German immigrants William Gruhn and Marie Gruhn (nee Rogala). Frank was the fourth of five children raised in the Gruhn household and he was a nearly lifelong resident of Humboldt County. He often recounted stories of riding his bicycle all over Eureka each day to pick up supplies and food for the family's dinner during the depression years. Frank graduated from Eureka High School with the class of 1942. In December of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served with the 91st Airdrome Squadron until his discharge in January 1946. Frank was very proud of his military service, but he often joked that it was really tough being stationed much of the time in Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. After returning from the service, Frank attended Humboldt State College where in 1950, he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. In 1956, he completed his college education when he earned a Master's degree in Education. While attending college, he met Mildred Wier and on August 29, 1948, Frank and Millie were married in Eureka. They made their home in Arcata, where in 1954, he began a nearly 30 year career in education as a business teacher at Arcata High School. That same year their first child, Harry, was born and in 1955, their second child, Dee Ann, was born. In 1960, Frank became Arcata High School's business manager and later the Assistant Superintendent for the Northern Humboldt Unified School District. He retired in 1983. After retirement, Frank and Millie travelled throughout much of world and enjoyed entertaining at their summer home in Willow Creek. Frank's retirement was interrupted in 1995 with the passing of his daughter Dee and again in 2004 when Millie passed away. In 2005, Frank re-united in friendship with grade-school friend Carol Lee Nelson and in October of that year they were married. They spent eight joyous years together, living in Eureka until her passing in 2013. In 2014, Frank moved to Sherman Oaks to be near his son. Frank is survived by his son Harry (Cathi); his stepsons Greg (Lisa) Brogdon and John Brogdon; his stepdaughter Nancy Brogdon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Marie; his wife Mildred; his wife Carol; his brothers, Albin and Ted; and his sisters Helen and Marion. Services are being held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka on Wednesday, June 8th at 10:00 a.m., with the committal to follow at St Bernard's Catholic Cemetery.
