Born Nov. 30, 1926, in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Samuel K. and Rhoda (Merrill) Fike. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Helen DeWitt; and a brother, Ralph Fike. Fike, 70, of 2 Woodlawn Avenue, Piedmont, died Saturday, June 14, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born Nov. 30, 1926, in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Samuel K. and Rhoda (Merrill) Fike. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Helen DeWitt; and a brother, Ralph Fike. Mr. Fike retired from Westvaco Corporation as a Calendar Room operator with 41 years of service. He was a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren. He was a veteran of World War II, enlisting voluntarily and serving with the U.S. Marines, 3rd Marine Division in Artillery. When the Korean conflict broke out, he was a member of the Active Reserves, Company D, Cumberland. He and his entire company were called up and he was one of the first eight that left with Company D, 1st Battalion, from San Diego, Calif., for Korea. He served in Korea and was one of the survivors of the Chosin Reservoir, being designated the "Chosin Few." Mr. Fike was a life member of Kelly Mansfield Post No. 52 American Legion. He served as first vice commander of the Kelly Mansfied Post for many years, and was responsible for the flags that are placed on the streets of Piedmont. This had been his project because Frank was a patriotic man who loved his country. He was a life member of Queens Point VFW No. 6775, McCoole; a life member of the Disabled American Veterans; and a member of Luke Local U.P.I.U. No. 676. He also was the former mayor serving two terms in 1967 and 1969, prior to being mayor he served as a councilman for the town of Piedmont. Surviving are his wife, Jessie (Channell) Fike; one son, Bob Fike and wife Leslie, Piedmont; one daughter, Beverly Kitzmiller and husband Lewis, Barton; one brother, Paul Fike and wife Betty, Arlington, Va.; one sister, Ruth Gift and husband Jim, Westernport; three grandchildren, Brant Kitzmiller and wife Ellen, Cresaptown, Lewis Kitzmiller II, and Ashley Kitzmiller, both of Barton; and one great-grandchild, Abby Lynn. Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Queens Point VFW will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Services will be held at the Westernport Church of the Brethren on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ervin Huston and the Rev. Jack Pease officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport, where full military rites will be accorded at the graveside by various veterans organizations. Pallbearers will be Brant Kitzmiller, Lewis Kitzmiller II, Jarold Wilson, James Gift, Kenny Ross, and Bernard Fazenbaker. Honorary pallbearer will be William Hood. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Frank's memory to services which he supported, Rescue Squad, Fire Company, etc., may pick up a memorial card at the funeral home.
